Happy Northern Pride everyone! I was honoured to be asked to record a performance for Northern Pride UK and I'm really happy to be able to share this performance with you all.
As a bit of background, as someone that grew up in England under the shadow of Clause 28 and the AIDS crisis, I can't emphasise enough how it really shattered the fight for LGBT rights and all the progress those that came before us had made. When we talk about Stonewall and all the momentum the community had built up and the cultural progress we'd witnessed in places such as San Francisco, all this came to a shuddering halt, and for the 80s and 90s especially, gay people and by proxy lesbians were reinforced as this terrible "other". Measures such as the infamous Clause 28 "not to promote or dare speak of homosexuality in schools" were brought in as a response to the ensuing media attack the gay community, and I wonder how much easier my childhood and emotional state would have been without this constant onslaught of "gay is bad" that every child of my generation had to survive through. So this performance is kind of a celebration of where we were and how we as a community have managed to heal from the greatest setback and its repercussions and are able to continue to expand our fight for those that are still facing injustice and just really having a bit of a crap time of things.
