Here's the other thing in regards to sugar that a lot of those programs don't mention:
Sugar is a preservative, in high quantities. It is put into foods where it has no business being simply to make them shelf-stable. The thing is that these foods don't necessarily taste sweet: your bread is unlikely to strike you as a desert item. But, look on the back of any store-bought bread: the FIRST ingredient is sugar. That means there is more sugar than any other single ingredient. Your sandwich is desert.
If you made your own bread you would never add this much sugar. Most recipes have a tablespoon for each cup of flour, usually about five grams in total. Ditto for bread made by a local bakery. The extra few cents is well worth paying for much healthier meals.
Basically, don't try to replace the sugar in your sweet treats. Keep them exactly as they are, and take out the sugar you aren't tasting.

152 pounds a year!?!?! I don't even know if I buy 10 pounds of sugar a year and it's usually during the holidays to bake stuff to enjoy with friends and family and to give away. This is insane!!!

Don't eat grains!
Grains are the worst!
And when I say "grains" I'm talking about SEEDS!
Don't eat any seeds...and yes beans are seeds...and walnuts are also seeds!

I can really recommend coconutsugar, but that is PURELY because it tastes really good. I was not aware of the health clames. it is really expensive so if you cant taste it I just use regular cane sugar.

Ok, but the primary reason we eat sugar is bc it's sweet. If we are going to eat things with it (that aren't fruit& veg) and we know that it's healthier to get it from fruit and veg, then the ideal form of added sugar is whichever gets the job done the most efficiently, ie taste sweetest with the smallest portion, with "portion" measured by "body affective quality" (by which i mean, it's not quantity based, it's how much it messes with you, ie a combination of the gi measure + how much your body makes glucose indirectly + other affects like does it mess with gut biome etc).

Supposedly agave nectar is like 2x sweeter than sugar, meaning we can satisfy the reason for adding either while theoretically halving the end result gi measure (theoretically bc IDK if the glucose made indirectly from the fructose is proportional to the amount absorbed when adding sugar instead of agave, a question i would've wanted answered in this video, a question to be applied to each of the sugar replacements shown.) Then there's the other questions spawned, such as "is there benefit to the delay of liver made glucose processed from fructose, like if the liver regulate the amount of glucose it makes how beneficial is that regulation?" and "do any of these added sweeteners including reg sugar harm our gut biome, if so which is least harmful while most efficient as a sweetener?"

I have apple juice that says no added sugar and its made from concentrate. In the nutrition label it says 24g total carbohydrate, 19g total sugars, 0g added sugar.
I looked it up and the concentrate is made with *fruit sugars*. Im not sure what that means vs regular and this video was in my recommendation at the right time! I just figured id try to ask bc it doesnt taste like just apple but it tastes different than the super sweet non health type juices.

Not sure if anyone will see this, but I’ve had major depressive disorder since i was about 11– I found this channel during a severe episode and your cooking videos brought me such comfort, I’d watch them for hours. They were one of the only things that could calm me down some nights. Now, I’m in the trenches of another episode and am so glad I can still find comfort and entertainment in your videos again even years later. Happy to see you successful and thriving :)

You eat sweets because they’re good for the soul, you eat most foods because of their nutrition. Trying to make sweets good for you just ruins the point. Also, it is OKAY if your diet isn’t perfectly healthy. As long as your health isn’t majorly impacted by your diet- say for example getting scurvy because you lack vitamin C- you’re good. It’s ok to eat fast food and super sugary sweets from time to time. And if your diet IS unhealthy, that’s not a moral failing to feel ashamed for. Yes you should work on your diet but shame and guilt will only make you want to eat more of the unhealthy stuff.

Natural honey, (produced by bees) is antibacterial because it sucks all the water out of bacteria. Of course, not much can survive without water in it. But this doesn't work if you eat it. Your entire digestive system is flooded with water. There's only so much water honey can absorb. Once it is overwhelmed and saturated with water, (and it WILL be overwhelmed and saturated in your stomach), any and all antibacterial properties is lost.

It makes sense to put honey on something like a burn, a scratch, a rash, or a non-bleeding wound. The water present in such situations would not be enough to saturate the honey. But ingestion is just not going to work. It's like throwing a sponge into the ocean and expecting the ocean to dry up.

Small bit of feedback I'd like to gove about your videos. You're serving as a science communicator. Using numbers to describe the differences between sweeteners is going to be much more effective than vague statements of slightly more than or a lot more than.

Whenever I see a "healthy" recipe that tries to mimick an utterly unhealthy sort of food, I automatically assume it's a scam. Any replacement for sugar has its own problems. If you want a healthy dessert, try a fruit salad (from fresh fruit, of course). If you want sweet fatty cake or cookies, just enjoy the real thing without guilt from time to time.

a lot of HFCS is actually a bit less fructose than is in sugar. There's different formulations, but 42% fructose is very common. The "high fructose" is only high relative to other corn syrup which is mostly glucose.

My takeaway, grossly simplified:

Sugar is Sugar

Forget about the source, it's all either Fructose or Sucrose, source is irrelevant.

***Also the whole glycemic index thing irritates me, mostly because people either don't actually understand it ir don't understand the complete picture. The bottom line is that you're not fat because your blood sugar spiked, you're fat because you eat too much.

Bad statistic analysis. Just because Australians ate less sugar and obesity went up, doesn’t mean they are related. Did the obese people eat less sugar? That’s the stat to correlate.
