I believe the ability to perceive asmr is based on mental focus and your body/brains instinctual response to a stimulus. Now to explain. With mental focus i believe the less mental focus or even judgement  you are using the easier it is to experience asmr. Otherwise the more focused and or judgemental you are the less you are likely to experience it. I believe this because during times of high stress i have trouble focusing in class and i obtain asmr easier. The inverse conditions being true i dont experience  asmr very easily. Now for part 2. I believe that it has to do with your mind/bodies instinctual response to certain stimulus like sounds. When focused you dont need instinct and your concious mind makes judgements . However when unfocused your subconscious can roam somewhat free along with your natural response or instincts. That being said i believe as i might already have stated that asmr is an natural(instinctual) reaction to different stimuli. Meaning it is like goosebumps but for the inverse reason that goosebumps exist, not to alert of danger but to alert of something positive. ... i guess. I hoped this post wasnt too confusing because its late. But i hope it helps the asmr community. If you would like a better explanation or would like to talk about it just reply or even message me.

Before you tube asmr's, My first experience I clearly remember was The Breakfast Club scene where Claire is putting make up on Allison. Also from time to time I would experience it through music like... Bjork or Kate bush songs. There were probably many more experiences before you tube but I cannot remember them at the moment.

I really enjoy these ASMR videos and watch them every night with head phones to help me fall asleep as I have Hyperacusis which has given me insomnia the past few months. ASMR has helped me. However, I don't experience the head tingles. I love the sound of soft voiceS and whispering and many sounds, especially tapping with long nails. I am unsure if I experience or "have" ASMR?

The only sound that I can think reminds me of this or makes me feel relaxed is a vacuum.

I suffer with a rare form of migraine associated vertigo (ie: I have severe vertigo dizziness/spinning and pressure in my head all the time, and it is untreatable. It's also unbearable as it causes me to be bedbound and I suffer severe anxiety and panic attacks because of the symptoms of my physical illness. I just wondered if ASMR videos would be harmful to me because I've never heard of it and it just came up when I was looking for relaxation tapes for panic and chronic illness. Could you please tell me if you would recommend ASMR vids? And also, it would be of immeasurable help to me if you could make a gentle friend role play specifically for anxiety and vertigo attacks as there are none in existence and I know a lot of others who would benefit from it when having a bad attack. Thank you x

Very interesting. I used to think I was unique, especially what you said about Bob Ross shows, I used to watch them when I was anxious, stressed and unable to sleep. Watching them made me feel relaxed and in a very "tingly" state. I suffer from depression, panic and severe anxiety problems, but find ASMR videos help sometimes. Thank you for explaining and researching this subject, up to a few years ago I thought it was just me and I was weird. :) It would be great if this was studied and findings entered popular culture. I think it could help a lot more people.

I don't know why but I get REALLY strong tingles in my head when I hear a hairdryer or washing machine. I remember when I was little and I would sit next to the washing machine and start feeling tired. It's still my strongest trigger so if anyone can point me to a video with these sounds or simmiler that would help me alot

I have sort of an odd question. A lot of people say that ASMR triggers will cause tingles, a trance-like state, and relaxation... I have never experienced "tingles", but I do find certain sounds unusually relaxing (sometimes even loud ones), and sometimes get into a trance-like state, to the point where the words don't even matter anymore, I'm just listening to it like white noise because the noise itself is relaxing or otherwise pleasing (i.e. Yahtzee Croshaw from Zero Punctuation isn't "relaxing", but his voice is inexplicably addictive, and I'll listen to his loud, crude voice for hours while doing a mundane task just to hear him). Is this ASMR? If not, what exactly am I experiencing?

Does anybody else here have the ability to automatically experience "tingles" at any given moment?
I have always been able to do this but I never realised that it was connected with ASMR.

To activate this tingly sensation, I focus my consciousness to the centre of my forehead (third eye area).
An intense pleasurable feeling that almost feels electrified starts to happen from the centre of my brain to my forehead.
A slightly duller version of this happens to me whenever I have tried to cross my eyes.
I can stop this pleasurable tingly feeling instantly whenever I like but I cannot really explain what is going on up there.

Great video by the way!

Unfortunately, I can never, ever experience ASMR. Why? Some people believe that ASMR is directly involved with, and has a lot to do with, dopamine receptors. For whatever your ASMR triggers might be, a lot of people believe that the way it gives you that tingling, pleasurable relaxing sensation, is by hitting your dopamine recepetors somehow, and releasing the dopamine chemical into your brain in an effect similar to what would happen if, you ate chocolate or some other food that tastes good to you and is pleasurable to eat.

I however, ended up getting hooked on opiate pain killers after I got hit by a truck. I took them for so long, and at such high strengths, they virtually burnt out my dopamine receptors. Many things that should be, are no longer pleasurable for me. One of those things being - experiencing the ASMR feeling, which I cannot, and may never again, be able to feel.
