So when German bakers put sugar in their rolls, it has absolutely nothing to do with the American way of using sugar in baked goods. We use a little sugar to enhance the flavor but not to change the filling or consistency. These are completely different quantities that are at stake here.

Yes, the "ö" is pronounced like the "e" in "her", the "i" in "Sir" or the "u" in "church".

Fluffyness is nice, but not necessary. White doesn't mean sugary. Normal white bread rolls are savory/salty. And germans like seeds like sunflower oder sesame or pumpkins or or or...

There is NO SUGAR in our regular bread rolls, except Milchbrötchen

Any type of bread with pumpkin seeds is just sooooo good. You shouldn’t knock foods merely by how they look to you. The toasted pumpkin seeds add such a rich nutty flavor. Divine!

My favorite wasnt even among them. Its Käsebrötchen (cheese bread roll). Its a wheat bread roll baked with Gouda cheese on top. The cheese gives it a crispy top with a salty cheese flavor and it pairs really well with cold cuts but even with just a bit of butter and salt its really good. There is even a version, where instead of just cheese, its even topped with bacon cubes.
