Excellent history lesson, I live in Augusta Georgia and I didn’t know that Columbia was burned to the ground. Thanks.
ОтветитьYou do a great job ! Love watching .
ОтветитьNot all southernets are rednecks and eat squirrels.
ОтветитьColumbia is beautiful ! My son graduated with his masters degree from University of South Carolina . Thanks for the great video as always
ОтветитьGoing backward and seeing what I missed
ОтветитьAfter they burned the city down they gave it back to black people the University of South Carolina was a black college then KKK took it away from black people closing it for 5 years then opened it up as USC. Now only a small population of the black community attends
ОтветитьThey didn't even have desks in that school house! I saw a test given to kids about to graduate from a one room school house in the early 1900's. There was no multiple choice and they had to KNOW the content. It was way harder than anything we had to pass when I was growing up. So I would say the education they got was better.
ОтветитьI lived in South Carolina for 13 years and I’m 13 years old so basically my whole life 🤞🏽🤭
ОтветитьTraveler's Hint: Call the church offices for permission to tour sanctuaries.😊
Yes, they burned churches for revenge. 😡The Washington Street Methodist church, across from First Pres you were by, was burned.😡
The First Baptist Church where the convention to secede was held was the target.
(Articles were signed in Charleston.)
When they came to burn First Baptist, a Union Soldier asked a First Baptist member on the street where the church was. Legend has it, he was directed to the Methodist church to save his own. The original sanctuary still stands.🙏🏼
I was baptized there and my mother's,( who used to give State House tours) funeral was held there.
Her death was sudden and she was a young 68.
Everybody knew her from the State govt. and Pop's business. So, it was really full. I thought that was so nice. It was comforting.🙌🏼
Nice video of the Capital city.
The Victorian home you admired is Manns-Simons house and is on the historic register and a popular African American cultural site.
They didn't burn all the big homes down, but came pretty close.
Free blacks and widows were ravaged and raped by Union forces with Sherman's knowledge and Grant's apathy - all over the vanquished South.😢
* Things tour guides aren't allowed to discuss.🤐
My mother was given a revised Guide's book for her educational tours.🤫
The Robert E. Lee monument in front of the State House has been vandalized and its battle flag removed by Governor/ U.S. Ambassador to U.N. Nikki Haley, following the horrific Mother Emmanuel racist's killings in Charleston.
Bitter and Sweet, Shame and Glory. Every State has its share. South Carolina suffered the most war casualties and hosted the most conflicts of the Revolutionary War🇺🇲 for Colonial freedom from Britain.
Y'all come back now, ya hear?🤠🌴🌙
Gosh you Was at my State
ОтветитьWhat is so 'gorgeous' about a city?
ОтветитьSir! I’ve lived in S.C. all my life. It use to be a good place when I
was coming up. Now! It’s just a
place of thugs and corruption. Take it that all places aren’t maybe bad but most of Columbia is. Our streets and bridges are terrible! The State spends money on stupid stuff we don’t need instead of fixing things that really need it. They’re priorities are not in order. They care about keeping downtown looking really nice but the rest of the state is terrible! I wouldn’t recommend this state to ANYONE to live here. Especially if you have children. P.s. I forgot to mention too that this state has some of the rudest people you’ll ever meet.
Just great traveling with you and Nicole .
ОтветитьYou missed the Columbia Art Museum, it is probably one of the best art museums in the South for a city this size.
ОтветитьReally loved some of Nicole's comments in this one!
ОтветитьDon't forget the Army base, training center.FORT JACKSON. I took basic training there in 1974. Sure has grown!!!
ОтветитьMy mom grew up in a school like that. She said the teacher would take each grade ad teach them and give them their assignment while she'd go on to the next group. She would do this with different subjects.
Ответить.Columbia South Carolina Museum House in Year Monday April 10,2023.😐.
ОтветитьThat was interesting ❤
ОтветитьAccording to the South Carolina Encyclopedia the Fire was really a result of War. Cotton Bales had been placed out to light if they thought it was going to be captured, with intent to ambush but not set by anyone specifically. Leaving the Carolinians had tried to circle around so got disorganiized, then the railroad line was set on fire to stop Union from using it. Reports say an explosion happened and then tinders and sparks were flying about. Meanwhile, the remaining slaves had rewarded troops by getting them drunk as they passed by. Town got filled with drunk, or passed out soldiers...then really high winds set in and the bales caught on fire, soon all able to started trying to put them out. Reports say the Union Army was trying to put it out, when it reached where people had thin wooden walls. The Confederate Army came back to help and of coarse mad because they think it got set on fire,. So fighting amonst the fire, then of coarse people were drunk and started acting like idiots, breaking into places and homes, taking what they wanted. By the next morning a third of the town was burned. People said that it was retaliation, but since the Army was coming in to take over the City, and use it? Anyway, all the efforts between the two forces got the fire stopped spreading as soon as wind died back...A historian lived there and wrote down the event as a first hand view. Also some others still survive, but rumor dies hard.
ОтветитьMemorial to dead is Important for ANYONE, anywhere & anytime, .....in MY Opinion....People, Not Party.
ОтветитьOutstanding. I dearly miss Columbia. Served there in military for a time, my uncle later opened a large business there employing many. Then my oldest son and then one of his daughters graduated from the University of South Carolina there in Columbia. I have family buried in a church yard there. Oh how I miss Columbia.
ОтветитьThis was a funny video!
ОтветитьOZ// You know, I see on news and other stuff and I SEE- places/streets/buildings- that I,ve seen on your videos ! and I go- "Oh, I've seen that on Lord's vids !"- and my family look at me like- What's she on? ! LOL
ОтветитьThere are some great restaurants in that downtown area; Cola's being my favorite. My daughter and I spent the weekend there; in 2017; to see the solar eclipse. There is also a really nice zoo in Columbia; Riverbanks Zoo.
ОтветитьI lived in Columbia for 2 years, the town is a dump, the schools are straight trash and there only two areas you want to live, the traffic is horrible due to the river, glad I transfered for my job
Ответить"Columbia" refers to the goddess figure, essentially created to be the U.S version of the Roman deity "Libertas," or "Liberty," that personifies America. Great Britain similarly identified itself with the fmle god Britannia. Columbia's name, as you said, was derived from that of Christopher Columbus. A statue of Columbia sits on top of the U.S. Capitol Building in D.C. and D.C. itself is named after her. Around 1920 or so, "Liberty" became more popular than "Columbia" in usage. Everything from American cities and rivers to film studios and space shuttles have taken her name.
ОтветитьThat population figure doesn't surprise me because everyone and their grandmother are fleeing New York, New Jersey and Philly to move down to the Carolinas or Flor-i-da. South Cack-i-laki is the new "it" place to migrate to. Capital cities and university towns attract 'em like mosquitoes to a bug zapper.
ОтветитьA nice visit to Columbia, S.C. and another sweet video by Lord and Lady Spoda ! Thank you !
ОтветитьIt's about 20 correctional institutions in Columbia.
ОтветитьI was born and raised in South Carolina, we called Columbia the gates to Hell. The heat and humidity are almost unbearable at times.
ОтветитьNice town and nice Museum.
ОтветитьTwo things seem fake to me……hmmmmm🤔
ОтветитьI'm glad someone took time to show some good parts of Columbia ,but being the capital it should have more interesting things to see.
ОтветитьWhat is the wife smoking in that pipe?
Ответить"Oh little town of USC
the time has come to see,
there's nothing you can't be if you want...
but where were you
When it all came down on me
Did you call me out?"
Hahaha You called a Podium a Pulpit. Hahaha
ОтветитьMy daughter is a student at the University of South Carolina. Go Gamecocks!
Ответитьim from Aiken we call it the Met. Never heard of soda city. You learn something new every day.
ОтветитьI’m in Columbia now at the police academy for this week. Love your videos
ОтветитьNew York City is Full Service
ОтветитьAt age 81 I've seen a lot in Columbia. As a 1959 grad of Columbia high school & Carolina (67). Used to walk past Trinity cathedral daily to the downtown bus
ОтветитьThank you for shearing
ОтветитьThe State House was also destroyed when Sherman burned the city. There are gold stars on the sides of the building marking where the cannon balls hit.
ОтветитьThanks for sharing a pretty southern city. Its been a while but we used to go to Columbia regularly, always liked it. Wade Hampton was a should-be-better-known SC leader. Stay safe and away from the interstates (mostly).
ОтветитьCharleston is much nicer than Columbia
ОтветитьThat's ALL Columbia SC has, is a DAMN Maine street 🤔
ОтветитьCant forget Benedict college 💜💛
ОтветитьI've lived in Columbia my whole life and wouldn't live anywhere else. Glad you were able to visit!
