I just realized the reason that the port comes out of the top is because this is literally just the charging grip with the actual grip part taken off. Like it is the same exact piece of plastic, but worse. The joy con grip can already stand up by itself, this is so pointless.

Switch 2 will have Magnetic Joy-Cons like the original concept--BUT, because of this, old Joy-Cons just won't fit on the new Switch. To make old Joy-Cons work, they've made a little magnetic rail, that you can connect to your Joy-Con's and then basically convert them to the new magnetic system, BUT they still can't be charged on the New Switch. SO, Nintendo decided to make a Joy-Con charging stand, just to allow you to charge your old Joy-Con's IF you want.

Don't believe me--I'll prove you wrong this October! (If I speak with a lot of confidence, I'm SURE I don't have to provide any sources!)

Their already is an officially licensed joycon charging station from PowerA that holds more than two, so what is the point of this one?

I've never needed to externally charge mine since they last so long anyway. I've had my "exclusive" red joycons for years now, and I've never had a problem, which is strange because people keep complaining about drift.

So funny you brought this up a I was looking for some way to charge my joy cons the other day while having it docked as I was using my pro controller and needed the joy cons for another player to use for Mario kart.

So... Im really confused. I own one, but mine charges 4 remotes, and the cord is on the bottom. Im not a big gamer, the switch is mostly played by my kids so im probably just out of touch with this... But we've had ours a few years, most likely from 2021. The rails on the screen got a bit damaged and wouldn't charge the remote so i bought this thing. Im in Canada, and most likely bought it at EB Games (now game stop). I just double checked, and it has the switch name/logo so it's not a 3rd party item. So these have existed on the market for a while now... Or glitch in the matrix? Lol.

Exact opposite.
The rumours for a long time has been that the Switch 2 will have different. incompatible joycon rails.

If you cannot connect your old joycons to the Switch 2, you can't charge them.

But you could still use them for wireless, even if not connected.

So the solution is you need a joycon charger other than the console.

Me 3 minutes into the video: WHAT ARE WE TALKING ABOUT HERE!!!???
Ha, Arlo Burying the lead aside, I've been waiting for years for this product. My daughter has a TON of joy cons at this point, but only 2 are ever powered. I looked into an option like this at one point, but could only find third party options and my experience with third party has always been so abysmal that if I can't find first party, I just don't buy anything. So as for who this is for, its for me, or at least my family anyway.

They simply want for more people to buy current stock of Joycons, so probably this will help selling them to both Switch Lite and PC owners (because yes, you can use Joycons in PC as regular controllers, but they desync everytime you put them them into a Switch rail).

I actually always wanted this. I never got a charging grip, but I wanted one that didn't add the wings. Just for portability and so I can slide my joycon , connected as a controller, under a shelf on my desk etc.... I don't care about the stand part. I'd use this while playing.
$30 is lame though I dunno if I'll bother. I'm not going to buy the next Nintendo console so I'm sorta on my way out this year. I do plan on buying some Nintendo games that are coming out though, along with Metroid Prime 4.

I think it will mean that the new Switch 2 can wirelessly connect to the old joycons, but that the console itself wont have the same rails or something meaning you need a separate charger as opposed to just... keeping your old Switch around to use as an over glorified controller charger.

Huh, not sure why this is even needed TBH unless it's for convenience when you have extra people playing with the system

while it is possible they're future proofing for their latest system that's pretty much as far as I can predict with this thing just ninten future proofing for whatever happens next

easy changing sure, doesn't change the fact Joy-Con Drift will remain a heavy debate when a real release date for Super Switch Powers Forward but I'm getting off-topic here

so yeah....kinda but nothing beyond Convenience

This looks like you can take it off the stand and it will act as a connector for the joycons while they charge as you play? So it's a less ergonomic charging grip that comes with a stand? They could have made a stand for the existing charging grip? This is a weird implementation....

It's impossible for me to understand that someone people actually do the bulk of their gaming on those joycons. At best they'll do if you don't have access to anything else, like on a plane. Personally I use the Xbox Elite Series 2.

The USB cable comes out the top because it's literally just the center piece of the charging grip.
This was most likely a "Hey, we already make this charging grip. I could just take the center bit and bolt it to a stand and BOOM, a charging stand for the joycons!"

I don’t have a switch, but I am waiting for the Switch 2. I really hope it has higher graphical specs so that it can run things like the resident evil 4 remake without a huge downgrade in graphical performance when docked. For me, if a Nintendo console could allow me to play things like dragon’s dogma 2, the RE:Remakes and games like Elden ring or Stellar Blade in a addition to first party exclusives, it’d be a day one purchase for me. I’d rather only have to get one console instead of two. However, even as a big Mario fan, I just don’t think there are enough games like the ones listed above to tempt me to get a switch. Does anyone else feel this way? Like I think Nintendo should start catering a little more towards their older fans in the coming generation.

I'm shook that so many people don't have multiple sets of joycons... I bought a switch over other consoles because nintendo dominates the party game corner.

I've got three sets of joycons + two Pro controlers + an 8bitdo pro2 + two offbrand wireless gamecube style controllers.

Having 3 sets of joycons all charged on an aftermarket dock, means easy access to 6 controllers for simple party games, wii style.

The cable out the top is because they're using the same board as the charge grip, so they didn't have to make new models or anything except the stand and the back plate, that's also why it stands proud so they could reuse the face plate

The immediate logical conclusion to why this product is being released in October is simply for Mario Party Jamboree. In the niche scenario you have just a Switch Lite, you have Joy-Cons, and want to do the motion control modes, you’d need to charge them somehow. And even outside the niche scenario (if the motion control stuff doesn’t work for Switch Lite) it’s just for Mario Party and people who would impulse buy it for being useful.

That said, given the rumors, this might be future proofing for Joy-Cons to still be used for Switch 2 and be able to charge them without having them connect to the system. That makes a ton of sense, and would not be surprising in the slightest.
