i miss pipes, flying toasters, and aquarium screen savers. i would talk my grandpa into putting them on just to watch.
ОтветитьFun to know - but even if I didn't still have one CRT monitor in active use, I still like to install xscreensaver on all of my PC's, set to randomly rotate between the selection of screensavers I like the most. Also I've set it to use RSS feeds as source of text for screensavers that show text (like the star wars text-scroll one).
It's purely decorative for most of my PC's, but the thing isthat it pleases me more than just a dull same screen, or a blank monitor. And what's wrong with aesthetics? :)

ОтветитьThere's an old crt tv at a Lowe's near me that has the Lowe's logo ghosted on the screen whenever it goes black XD it's been playing the same promotional video since the 90's
ОтветитьBring em back 😭😭
If they keep me shut up its cool
Did you also know that Screensavers were demonised in the 90s and especially 2000s because they waste energy by disallowing the monitor/PC from going to sleep?
That said, if I were to use an OLED monitor, I'd definitely buy After Dark 5.0 if someone makes it. Have you seen how cute those flying toasters are? 😍 And who wouldn't want the Enterprise-E flying across your computer screen? Make it so!

ОтветитьI miss screensavers
ОтветитьI'm VERY disappointed JOHNNY CASTAWAY Screensaver isn't mentioned 😕
ОтветитьWOW i recognize that picture you keep using through out that video, i think it's called "Beautiful Face"
ОтветитьThe maze screensaver always gave me the heebie-jeebies
ОтветитьI still use a screensaver but really only for a e t h e t I c s
Ответитьi actually found a nice screen saver that emulates Star Trek's computer interface, with blips and boops and animations. it looks so cool, expecially if you are using a laptop and use this screensaver while rocking an rgb keyboard.
ОтветитьI was worried about having to buy another expensive tv.
ОтветитьI always liked After Dark
ОтветитьThe "BEST" 98 Screensaver of all time was the 3 Budweiser Croaking Frogs ! BUD-WEI-SER ! Each Frog had it's part. I'd like to run it in native to Win 10,but i know that won't happen! 😎
ОтветитьScreensavers are super nostalgic for me. Growing up in the 2000s, computers were such an exciting new world back then, even without internet access, and playing around with all kinds of settings including screensavers was quite interesting as a kid. I remember the maze screensaver which was kind of the "original backrooms".
Later in the late 2000s to early 2010s, I remember searching for screensavers on the internet and downloading a lot of screensavers, often with seasonal themes like autumn, winter, christmas, halloween, spring etc., showing nice animated villages or landscapes. They had such a cozy and nice feeling to them, and seeing screensavers nowadays always makes me nostalgic for the simpler times of my childhood in the 2000s.
Are you Will Forte's long lost brother
ОтветитьHey i have an msi pc!! :awesome:
ОтветитьJohnny Castaway on Winodws 95. Best screensaver ever. I can still remember the strange sounds coming from the living room at night because no one turned the volume down
ОтветитьMost Windows screensavers dating back to Windows 95 still work fine on Windows 11 with no extra config needed. I'm currently running the Flying Toasters screensaver from the After Dark disk on my Windows 11 system.
ОтветитьI love that you used a Polybius burn-in crt lol.
ОтветитьWe have to make ray traced screensaver.
ОтветитьWhat happened to the TV show "The Screensavers"?
ОтветитьThey still work if you can find one I use one from xp still works on 11
ОтветитьScreensavers still exist in windows 11. To enable them you need to search in the settings app.
ОтветитьI still run electric sheep on all my machines 🐑 🌩
ОтветитьWe used to have an After Dark Star Trek version screen saver that I really liked for our 486 PC back in the day...The last SS I've used was in the early 2000's, there was a custom "Matrix" SS with raining green characters like from the movie :)
ОтветитьIt is a screen saver.
ОтветитьPolybius burn-in. Hmm.
ОтветитьI'm old enough to have gone to college pre-computer. So fun to see young people representing these as ancient history!
ОтветитьSpent hours watching Johnny Castaway screen save - it was like a soapie
ОтветитьI think the best way to deal with them is to use a aod on amoled displays like Samsung and Xiaomi to save battery and also get a basic usage such as displaying time or a graphic if u want like an art piece. Remember Linus did a video of transparent mi TV and it had a aod the same thing
ОтветитьAfterdark flying toasters
ОтветитьWith OLED we’re going to see these return
ОтветитьI always liked the bubbles screen saver.
ОтветитьThe brick wall maze and the moving pipes will always be nostalgic.
ОтветитьI remember leaving messages or co-workers on screensavers...
ОтветитьXD on the programming example at MSDN the screensaver is the same .exe just another extension so. . . , you could put anything as screensaver XD
Ответитьhey, send me a pc
ОтветитьThat pipeline screensaver unlocked some deep core memories I didn't know I had.
ОтветитьI guess screensavers will go into oblivion again after the advent of Micro LED screens
ОтветитьJohnny Castaway was the best screensaver ever!
Ответитьburn in is still a problem with modern tvs, a friend has his chrome bookmarks permanently burned into his tv, yeah he used his pc with a tv instead of a monitor.
ОтветитьI had an awesome third party screen saver on a colour Mac in, I guess, the early 90's. I think various shapes would move across the screen but the key feature was the screen would appear to develop a jagged hole with wires poking out and electrical flashes and a dog would appear and fix it. My kids loved that.
ОтветитьOne thing that always baffled me is why there wasn't just a black screen saver. I get turning your monitor on can be annoying, but why not take say that color changing cube and just make it a pixel big, if that? We're only worried about turning off the phosphors after a bit of time, not just randomly activating them, right?
