Norm Abrams covered his workbenches with MDF. He held the sheet down with only a few screws. When a surface got too chewed up, he flipped it over. So every MDF cover was used twice.

How does one have a CNC at his disposal but no adequate dust collection?!

OSB. Ew. Plywood is cheap... even really good stuff.

Like some of your ideas but my number 1 tip for version 2 is use Radiata pine plywood $50 at HD. Will avoid almost all the issues you had with OSB - which I use for NOTHING related to shop or any other cabinets. Enjoyed your video though.

Dang lumber so expensive it makes sense for me to learn how to laminate Formica or similar low cost product onto cheaper plywood.

Regarding the extension wings. I like the second set with the lock plate, in wood working “really secure” wins the day keeping costs low and making sure all my fingers are in tact.

Sad - these prices. I recall buying OSB for about 12 bucks a sheet. Which is about what it's worth.

Wondering why you used the CNC for the templates, but not for the bench itself? CNC not large enough to accommodate the pieces?

pro tip lol bessy 1/2" pipe clamps are 20 bucks on amazon and black pipe is about 10 buck for 24". so pipe clamps are much more economical then the others.

Just came across your channel. Great presentation style and enjoyed it. It has also given me a couple of ideas for my own bench so thank you for that. From the UK (where plywood is also extortionately priced).

For sealing almost any wood with paint, I'm sorry to say that I don't have much confidence in the latex-ammonia-water basse paints. I use Cover Stain and then an enamel.

You really didn't have to wait 24 hours or the least the next day to dry. 3-4 hours and you could have moved on with less clamps. The 24 hour method has really been debunked.

I like the "wing" idea. I was thinking that you might solve the problem with them being flush with the work surface if you added some horizonal "pins" to the side. Something similar to when you add an additional section to a dining room table.

I am following Stumpy Nubs and have installed my table saw blade guard. I have not noticed any problems or slow downs with it on. I am going to keep it that way unless I have to remove it (dados) because I like my body parts all connected to my body.

Just stumbled across this video. Loving the warts 'n' all approach and found it very entertaining (subscribed). I work a lot with reclaimed and donated material and I can tell you from experience that OSB is a better material than many people think. Sure it has it's limitations but most of the problems people site are simply due to trying to use it like plywood. It's different, be different. Learn and grow. 👍

This was the most brutally painful build I've ever witnessed and I salute you, fully. And the sheer reckless chutzpah of using OSB - OMG! All that wood dust and wood chips from something made of wood dust and wood chips, I feel I need to break out the wet/dry vac in my office just from having watched this. Great video. Thank you.

I haven't laughed this hard with an instructional video, ever. Nothing like watching someone make the same mistakes you have, and offering hilarious commentary at the same time. I've been doing woodworking for nearly 50 years, much of it as a professional, but I'm now setting up my last shop, and you've offered some great insights. Thanks!
