Presented at the 2005 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the MX Crossport was Mazda's concept car that addressed the U.S.'s love affair with crossover SUVs. The MX Crossport was relatively compact in size compared to the other cars in its class with a wheelbase of 110.0 inches, and an overall length of 182.2 inches.
The exterior was also quite sporty-looking, much more so than the Japanese company's other SUV at the time, the Tribute. The MX Crossport featured boldly protruding front and rear wheel arches, a large lower grille and a flowing nose hood and sharply-raked A-pillar and windshield. It exhibited many of the distinguishing design traits of the company's sporty, rotary-powered RX-8, most notably the flared fenders that gave the vehicle an aggressive stance.
Inside, the MX Crossport was as sporty as it was roomy. Although there were fold-down rear seats to accommodate cargo, it also featured numerous sporty touches including four independent, leather-clad bucket seats and a three-spoke sport steering wheel.
Later that same year, Mazda announced at the Tokyo Motor Show that it would be introducing a new crossover vehicle intro production dubbed the CX-7. It went on sale in the U.S. in early 2006 looking nearly identical to the MX Crossport show car, and the CX-7 has been a sales success in America ever since.
