The amount of times the Eastern Roman Empire was on the brink of collapse happened at least a couple times per century. Despite losing large swarths of land the Byzantines managed to keep control of Anatolia, southern Greece and the regions around Constantinople under continuous roman rule for literally, in some cases, over a thousand years. As the Empire died so did the last bastion of Roman legacy, still one of the greatest empires of all of history.

The eastern Roman empire was Roman only at name since nearly all emperors had a Greek descedance and the official language was Greek. The fall of the empire was mainly a result of church's manipulation and control.

Τhe three Komnenos family members, Alexios - Ioannis - Manuel, and the three greats of the Macedonian dynasty, Fokas - Tsimiskes - Basil the 2nd, are probably the most exciting part of human history. And always sidelined...

Did he save the Empire? He kept losing battles. And when he guided the Crusaders through Anatolia they laughed at him because the towns and villages were full of Turks who had no-one to stop them infiltrating since the Byzantine defeat at Manzikert. Then Alexios unrealistically tried to take back Antioch when realistically he should have focused on lands closer to home.

Eastern Roman Empire is so close to making it into modern period.

Just 39 years before Columbus reached the Americas.

Its crazy to think of how europeans betrayed eachother simply for patches of land instead of uniting.

How can the Byzantines stop the Slavs, Lombards, Turks and Arabs from conquering their lands?

The first three are rather simple. If you give the Lombards a suitable territory and help them develop it, they'll have no interest migrating into your lands. This prevents Northern Italy from being identified as Lombardia.

As for the Slavs and Turks, you integrate them, diversify the gene pool as these people can easily be assimilated into an alternative culture. The Turks would give you terrific generals and a strong core for the army, the slavs would give you a robust economy.

What about the Arabs? Now, there is a tricky one. You are ultimately fighting against Islam. If you treat your Arab subjects better, the likelihood of them turning to an Arab Conqueror is less likely. This requires altering what is Christianity to allow greater diversity, in turn you might not even have an Islam problem at all. I believe Islam is a result of the strict view of homogeneity of the faith, which in turn is why there was a schism between the lands Rome did control and did not. Without such a strict interpretation, it is much easier to control the faith and prevent any schism from happening. Sometimes less is more. The same could be done with Islam making Muhammad a saint, so to speak, instead of a prophet. He would be Saint Muhammad, similar to any figure responsible for bringing Christianity as the dominant faith in any particular region. So that would become Muhammad's story, establish an Arabized version of Christianity even more so than Nestorian Christianity. This wouldn't prevent a rise of an Arab empire, although it will make it easier to reconquer as the premise of a Jihad is unlikely.

So that is likely to happen. A Christian Arab Empire would rise like it did with the Rashiduns, but since the Sunni-Shi'ite divide wouldn't exist, there is no Arab Civil War but the Umayyads still gain power. Abbasids however would not gain power and so with the decline of the Umayyads, the Byzantine Empire could reacquire all lost lands and even proceed further with the total subjucation of Arabia, all of its lost lands, and even Iran. Iran and Rome's wars did put both in a vulnerable position and such vulnerability would present an interest in conquest simply for that reason alone. So the Arab Empire would exist, but instead of being Muslim or Muslim being a separate religion from Christianity, it would be Arab Christianity which would identify itself as Muslim. Sort of a separate denomination of the Church of Jerusalem, the Church of Mecca, which also calls itself Islam or is identified as such just like how the Church of Latter Day Saints is also called Mormonism.

Byzantine history is so fascinating. The achievements of this East Roman Empire and civilization are totally underrated. Politics, Diplomacy, education, science etc. all of these still influencing our daily lives. One of the most interesting Books i read is called "Byzantine Grand strategy from the 8th to the 11th century"

He was at Julius Cesar level of relevancy, maybe not that much military competent but much better at dealing with internal politics of the empire leading to a much longer government and peacefully transition when he eventually died.

Why you give false information?! Empress Mariam was not Alan(Osetian)!!! She was sister of King George II of Georgia from Bagrationi dynasty (Monarchs of Georgia 10 to 19th century) and Alan’s were Vassals of Georgian kingdom. Her birth name’s Martha (Mariam)!!!
