Analyzing Russian Tanks in Ukraine: T-80 “Flying” Tank

For those curious, the only tank in service we haven't seen as of posting is the T-90M (there's probably only about 2 battalion sets in the Russian Army, although one of the units that has them, the 2nd Guards Motor Rifle Division, is in Ukraine so we might see them at some point). We also haven't seen the T-14 Armata, because it is notably not in active service.

And a lot of Russian simps complained about this point: Russia DOES have T-72As and T-72Bs in active service, and they have been observed in Ukraine. Many older un-upgraded T-72s were taken out of storage in recent years to fill out the new divisions they reformed. The 90th Guards Tank Division, which is in Ukraine around Chernihiv, was one of these units. If you're Russian you can literally Google (or Yandex?) this information. I've even seen Russian tank experts (who definitely don't seem to be that sympathetic to Ukraine) acknowledge Russian T-72As in Ukraine.

The EurAsian Times is claiming the T80 with its cage over the turret is superior to the Leopard 2, Challenger 2 an M1 Abrams. Their source is China says so. China is probably panicking that its MBT is vastly a copy of the T80. The T80 is considered in the military world as a failure.

T-80um2: I don't exist

T-80 has probably peformed the best do to its faster reverse speed. at least much better then the T-72 and probably the T-90. The T-90M is probably the best but sometimes they use ones without some of the T-90M's features like side skirts (era).

I watched a video about 20 minutes ago produced by Russia saying a factory near Moscow and one in Siberia that have been refurbishing T-80B and BV into BVM for decades have recently broken out the casting tooling and are making new BVM and BV T-80's from scratch again as they are running out of BVM battle damaged to refurbish and need to make new units. They claim to be able to do 50 per month once the old subcontractors are up and running again. They have redesigned the turret and body coupler, improved coupler armor, and sunken the auto loader storage rack to try and eliminate cook off, and pop goes the turret. The transmission has been regearerd for better fuel economy and more low speed a d rpm torque. The 100mm cannon will now be a rfled 110mm. On top of that, the armor has been doubled, and the addition of hundreds of tiny diamonds or pyramid shaped charges will protect from overhead rocket explosion. Also on top a new electronically operated and aimed, water cooled barells, 6 barrel .50 cal gatling gun firing 1,700 rounds per minute with a 2 shot anti armor rocket launcher like what if found on the American Bradley so if the carousel is loaded with anti bunker and they go against a tank they font have to manually load a Heat round. New night optics with infrared, thermal, motion hyper focus and ultraviolet modes.
Overall a more survivable, more efficient, more Deadly machine.

Can I ask to make a video on military specops / spetsnaz structure ? Just read a piece in bbc that while army propaganda in Russia tells that all cities they had to withdraw from were defended by local militia, in fact elite units were there and got heavy casualties, in particular 3rd brigade of Spetsnaz GRU in Liman. I don’t really understand how brigades of specops work (always thought of them platoon/company level units) and what are their tactics and capacity (can they have tanks / heavy armament)?

A matter of fact is T 64 was meant to be the more sophisticated and superior tank than T 72 and T 64 latest variant the T 64 BV is far superior to T 72 B3 and since T 64 gave rise to it's successor T 80 while T 90 was developed from T 72 it's natural to see why T 80 outperforms T 90 in both popularity and effectiveness

Why do we never see analysis of Uke tank losses or the number of Ukes killed in combat? All of these "analysis" sites are Uke/US/NATO propaganda outlets.

It's now July 2022 and Oryx has tracked more than 150 Russian T-80 variants destroyed or captured in Ukraine - getting on for 1/3 of their deployed strength, with dwindling ability to refit older ones and only stocks of older tanks to fall back on. Incredible.

As of May 28 2022, Oryx has documented 134 destroyed, abandoned or captured Russian T-80 variants in Ukraine. The actual number is almost certainly higher.

The only thing flying on this tank is the turret.

Bit of a mistake, but the T-80U has the T-80As new composite armor, which is a big improvement over the T-80B's.

It's called "flying" because when it explodes after a javelin strike, large chunks of it go flinging off at high speed.

BV, BVM or BU, it all doesn't matter. The one thing Russian tanks are any good at is launching their turrets into the sky when hit.

The T-80U/UMs are good looking tanks. Best looking "round turret-esque" of them all.

T-90Ms are probably the best looking Russian tanks ever IMO. The one T-80UM2 (Black eagle) was as well.

Numbers of lost T-80BVM and T-80U are wrong. According to Military-Today and photos T-80U losses <30. T-80BVM losses <=10 tanks. Knowing that 10% of tanks filmed 2 or more times and posted on different dates and that some of the tanks might be recaptured so really losses can be ~20 T-80U and 8 T-80BVM.

this is the blunder of abandoning the tried and tested Deep Battle concept for the BTG system...this is useful for smaller irregular battles of Afghanistan and Syria, not a more conventional war... a lesson not learnt...
