To the critique of Rolex being overpriced based on the replica comparison, you have to consider that not all the cost is associated with parts. Otherwise, why don't the Chinese just create an authentic watch if it's so good? Design, ingenuity, quality control, are all things they lack. Rolex created this design and is backing it by 100 yrs of craftsmanship. Knockoffs will never come up with a design so desirable and recognizable. Rolex did. The knockoff may run only a few months because of a manufacturing flaw. They can't guarantee. Rolex does. Those are all vital characteristics that go into building a brand, which makes Rolex so incredibly popular in the first place. Fakes will never achieve that, no matter the quality (which is not on par in this case), because all they really offer is a visual replica. How anyone would feel wearing a fake brand is up to them, but a Rolex brings about a status symbol of hard work and accomplishment. A reflection of character. Will anyone actually believe that you're wearing a $35k watch? It will reflect your character in a lesser light. I see a lot of comments exclaiming how good the fakes are. The truth is, replica watch manufacturers are getting really good at making watches that LOOK like the real thing. That said, these watches are almost always trash. They're usually made from cheap components that don't hold up over time and haven't gone through the rigorous QC and regulation processes that authentic watches are subjected to. A real Daytona has 100m water resistance; I wouldn't wash my hands wearing a replica Daytona, even a well executed one. They're junk.

If you have to have an authentic Daytona in hand to tell the difference . . . then the only difference is performance. Soon they will fix that, too, as even inexpensive Miyota (e.g., 9075) and Seiko (e.g., NH35) auto movements can match Rolex's vaunted accuracy, so it is really not very hard these days.
