I don’t think that Luffy wore a helmet but his hat was covering his eyes and when he went back to the future he dropped the straw hat and Imu saw a glimpse of Luffy, and he looked exactly like his brother Dyrus and the only thing that separated Dyrus and Luffy was the scars on their eyes. When Luffy disappeared into the future both brothers were confused but Dyrus didn’t care and walked up to the straw hat and picked it up and wore it on his head. Imu looking at his brother saw no difference between his brother and Luffy. Dyrus continued to wear this straw hat until his death and he passed this hat to his generations eventually going to the Pirate King Gol D. Roger.

Before he was captured by the marines to be executed, he gave the straw hat the he had to Shanks and told him to give it to his son. Then when Shanks went to give the Gomu Gomu no Mi to Roger’s son Ace, knowing the true power the fruit held he also brought the straw hat owned by the former Pirate King. When Shanks wen to get a drink at the bar with his crew mates, Luffy accidentally ate the Devil fruit and Shanks loses his arm. Luffy was given the straw hat instead of Ace and finally, Luffy’s hat gets returned to him. If Luffy goes back to the future confused about why he still has his straw hat knowing that he dropped it, this is because he never lost it.
