Not worth it don't believe the hype you will get 3 to 4 sales a year even with perfect models! And soon with the digital money system you wont be able to sell anything!

My advice will be to work as an independant studio and find client that pay you good for YOUR PROFILE. There is very skilled poeple but that doesnt know how to carry a customer or the work as an independant. Here is the difference.

If you want to sell 3d models , stop making 3d models . Rich people don't make what they sell. They have others upload their work to sell on their websites. That's a fact.

The most important part the market is declining due to oversaturation, at least for the last 20 years. So even if you find out how the current situation works for you, expect it to get worse.

The short answer is yes, you can make a living from it. The reason a lot of people don't is simply that they're doing it wrong. Good luck to everyone that tries.

For me 3d modeling has worked, I found a place to sell my models or inspirations. But you must have a backup fund for those months where sales are low...

3d modelers on turbo squid or similar make crap stuf and those who do good stuff, ask crap small prices for an item that the buyer would be willing to pay easily withoutr blinking 10 times more...... the logic that you need to be cheaper than an artist that is emp;lyed in a studio is bullshyte to say the least..... you can certainly ask what a 3d modeler would cost for one month salary , for a single model, for 2 simple reasons... 1 no one can hire infinite amount of 3d modelers for ever permanently, 2 even if they did, they still wouldnt be as fast as buying from u a production ready model... it has to be noted, that on top of everything, your client the buyer is NOT the person who is putting in the money... it is the final movie or whatever company that pay the studio for the production for his 3d animation that puts in the money.... and your buyer , perfectly writes down every single cent he has to spend to pruduce what he was asked for in any way and get payed for it or tell the client to go fuck himself... and yes that coyuld even be HBO.

so if u do have a great charactr or architectural scene that took u a couple of weeks to make perfect to the tin... it is folly if yoiu do not ask anythingabove 4000 us$ instead of he usual pathetic 100 to 400 dollars range.... and guess what... they will pay for it indeed and beg you next time to give them more.
i sell 3d assets and make the worst month 6000 euro a month. yes six thousand... and that a hobby for me.

you should ask yourself, is the earning worth the time and effort spent on a single 3d model? The market is very limited. Most game developers or agencies likely have their own library or suppliers of 3d models. This is only good to earn extra or passively. Don't forget that you create 3d because you love doing so, making money out of it is secondary.

What about photo scanned models? I've been thinking about getting into that business since I'm from a country that has a very unique landscape, rocks, vegetation and so on and it's literally not being utilized by anyone here. The population is 55,000 people so I know :P
I'm sure I could sell Hdri's taken here and photo scanned models.
Does anyone have experience in this field that is willing to share?
Any tips? :)

if you are a kid and you are good at that then you can make a living out of it. if you do that from young until the end of high school if you are good you will probably have enough money to buy a used car to drive to college if it's a long-distance

In Amerika I think 3000$ is standard income too.
That's why most Asian can lives with 500$. It's worth one month salary

but why sell at all if you can't even make a living out of it? Modelling takes a looooooot of practice/work. Longer than any apprenticeship or study at university. Why sell at all if this effort is not appreiciated? let the market suffer until they value it. What we are also lacking of as 3d artists is a b2c market. All of this is B2B and that works only by either doing significant price changes overall or by opening up a B2C market with a broader audience? so why doesnt the B2C market work so far? Because the customer base over the years built up an expectation of free extra content and would bash on any content market model, as well as the developers being afraid of this reaction. So all in all the players salt their own soup. Like I said.. there need to be an significant change before I consider selling models like that.

So... Artists need to value their work more, rather than lowering the price to make a quick sale. It's like the horrible economics of a WoW auction house... Those big companies who need the models aren't NOT going to buy them. They can't make them themselves, hence why they are buying them. Start utilizing the demand so the wage evens out.

he is right though you are hemorrhaging money, in sense at the price range for your last example 4 pieces done in 160 hours for $500 is only $1.28 hour your being paid less than some third world countries even for enjoyment and love of the craft you still need to keep a realistic value of your time or you become the proverbial starving artist, speaking's one who knows from years of being he.

Got it. Dont live in California. lol.

Really arent we just selling the 3D art to ourselves, other 3D artists? Whether you are a programmer who wants models or a someone who has a 3D printer. The real market is selling a car to a car company because they dont want to pay an artist $20 an hour for a week when they could just spend a couple hundred and get it right away. We just dont make a product for the average joe. And who we do make it for, doesnt have a lot of money or doesnt want to spend a lot of money on our models.

I could live with as little as like $150 (minimum wage here) and quality wise I think I'll be able to do anything any first world 3d artist does by year's end (plus I have a decade+ experience in traditional art and stuff) but I have no idea how to sell anything online. It sounds so impossible... do you just have to register in a lot of stores and upload your stuff there? Surely there's more to it?

ok I'll get bashed but fuck it I'm just going to say it. more you guys let 3rd world countries into the western market more we'll lose money. they'll just copy your work, cut the price, sell it when you can't and you'll forced to cut your prices. now thanks to cgtrader like websites we're all enslaved by big corporates. now, we have 2 options to fix this. 1 leave the market and let them burn until the prices goes back to normal. 2 build a new non-profit art trading platform that asks social security numbers or passport copies when you register, adaptively forces seller's price range according to their currency and maximize true creator's profits. so you heard me right, we need to lobby up and go for monopoly. they asked for it.

you are kind of contradicting yourself.
first you are saying that inhouse modellers are more expensive to work on a model than just buying it.
But than you are saying that inhouse modellers are more experienced and provide a better model...

What are you trying to tell?
