How do I measure 1/4 -1/8so I can trim the wick

We found one in our kitchen utensils drawer and had absolutely no idea what it was for. We thought it might be some sort of medical tool. After a lot of research I finally found this video which tells me what it’s for but doesn’t tell us why we need to trim the wick and what (if any) the benefits are in doing so.

That doesn't even look lit. Don't your trim it afterwards?

I bought a candle and the wick is already so short so I have no clue how to cut it so it’s not too short 😭
