The Indiana Jones scene was not improvised. Yes it was supposed to be that Harrison Ford had a big sword fight with that guy but since he wasn't feeling well he said to Steven Spielberg I don't think this is how Indiana would deal with this situation, and he suggested just pulling out his gun and shooting him.

Harrison Ford did a lot of character building and wanted to make sure that he stayed true to what the character would do in situations. He did the same thing in The Empire Strikes Back when he told princess Leia I know after she said I love you. He was supposed to say I love you back but he said Han Solo would not say that
