My almost 5 year old Laptop i7 7700HQ does it in 1min 39 seconds on Ubuntu and 2 min on Windows! M1 speed overhyped?

I bought a custom imac with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD and I did some tests against my Intel Macbook Pro using eclipse/tomcat with a project I'm working on and the iMac with M1 is much slower than the laptop even with native java (zulu sdk ), and here I see that it is faster, what am I doing wrong?

It would be great if you compare android studio performance on a linux machine ss well.

I appreciate what you're doing for the folks but, aren't you cross compiling on the Ryzen? Firefox definitely has native code compilation. You're cross compiling on the Ryzen but not on the M1? Also, did you enable parallel computing on the Ryzen like the others guy suggested?

The result is strange. My laptop is 5850u ram 16G and it comes out slower than Apple M1 at 1 minute 57 seconds. It looks like your benchmark tests are being tainted by external factors like your antivirus settings.

On a Lenovo Slim 7 Pro (Gen 6) 16 5800H/Nvidia 3050 using Kubuntu 21.10, I get 1m23s so definitely some windows overhead going on or something else happening on that Asus machine.

This is not about Ryzen vs M1 but about some hidden bottleneck in that particular laptop. Most likely storage related.

you are not testing anything except SSD and "gradle clean" doesn't help if there are no changes, building JVM languages is very disk AND network heavy, an i3 with ram disk can beat M1..

It is a gaming laptop, of course you have to plug it in. It's drawing power from both AC and battery for intensive tasks.
Loved the video, but that "white theme / dark theme" felt a bit raci... COUGH funny , I meant funny :D

Funny that you are testing with a Windows 11 that is currently on beta. It's not a stable release yet and it could be even more unstable if you are on the dev channel

This is a nice test, but Android Studio is slow on Wndows. I dare you to repeat this with any Linux distro on Ryzen - Ubuntu or Fedora. You'll be surprised :)

Well I did the same with my laptop (ROG Zephyrus G15 GA503QM-HN035) with Ryzen 7 5800HS
I downloaded the benchmark project and got the next results
1 run - 1 m 14 sec
2 run - 44 sec
3 run - 41 sec
My laptop is not stock. I replaced ssd to Samsung 980 Pro and added 32gb RAM stick and I use Windows 11

So results in a video are a bit strange for me

Windows is the main culprit here, not the hardware. Linux on the same machine would yield substantially better results

You can also use Android Studio in Linux on Intel. It could have also some impact. I haven't used Windows for a while but it was significantly slower there five years ago.

guys when you compare the price 2000 and 1000, keep in mind that apple with same ram and ssd as asus but no hz on screen also cost 2000... litteraly base model asus have more specs than base apple, and top model on both have same spec and same price...

Maybe try Linux on the PC machine? A lot of people use Linux based SO in Android development.

Can’t believe the speed of the m1 chip. It’s not enough to makes me want to move over to MacBook. I love multitasking with windows. Any programmer knows how much you swap between windows and multitask. Some prefer Mac for its terminal for its ease and simplicity. I prefer finding and moving windows as quick as possible. Look at the bright side of windows builds, it’s gives a needed break lmao.

Don't you think it is a bit unfair to run it on windows 11? as it is still not on a stable release, and on my windows 11 machine at this point in time android dev is a lot slower then on win 10

Is this build and the code you are running slanted towards making ARM code? Without knowing more here, I am wondering if this workload is - simply favourable to the Mac M1 CPU?

I think it really helps that Android Studio running natively on M1 Mac is compiled to run on ARM CPUs (M1) then it's being used to compile your code for Android phones, which is also has ARM CPUs, so basically the compiler is not struggeling that much to convert between different CPU architectures for the HOST & the TARGET as they have the same base assembly instruction sets.

I think that W11 have an impact in the ROG performance. Also the power profile selected from Armory Crate will have an impact too.
