The a350 and 787 are NOT Competitors!

I have flown both, namely 787-10 and the a350-900 with Singapore Airlines.
In terms of comfort, feel of the cabin, legroom, mood lighting etc they are identical. However, I preferred the 787-10 a bit more. This is because at the back of the a350-900 lies the crew rest bunk area, and is directly overhead where the cabin baggage would otherwise be. This can be a bit of a headache especially during long flights with a reduced availability of legroom, since now you've got to stow your hand luggage in the space in front of you.

The other reason is smoothness during turbulence. During journeys with both aircrafts, we encountered mild to moderate chops while flying close to some significant storm clouds. The 787 was a bit better at making it a smoother ride.
On the a350-900, it felt bumpier. Still better than the a330 and on par probably with my favorite, the 777-300ER.

In the end, I'm splitting hairs and these differences are by and large neglible and airline dependent on the whole.

I have been assuming that A350 was a 787 competitor due to the similarities in materials but still not really the same type of machine. However, I have also seen A350 as a way larger jet than 787. I used to take 787 to US and to Qatar but from Stockholm Qatar Airways changed to A350. That felt like a much bigger jet. Closer to a 777. I sometimes see 787 as a 757-replacement (yes, single aisle, I know) which can handle both medium and long distance but with fewer passengers. I don't know. I like to fly both :)

To compare a bit...
I prefer the 787 to the A330. I did not fly the Neo.
I prefer A350 to the 777.
I prefer 737 Max to A320 Neo.

i flew domestic between hanoi and hcm alot on both 787-10 and a350-10/xwb and i can say a350 is honestly abit nicer

The seating configuration is what makes or breaks either of them. 3-3-3 on 787 can be really cramped in some window seats where the wall curves into where your shoulder would be. Meanwhile many a350s also adopt the same 3-3-3 pattern despite the extra width. So from a perspective of personal space the a350 is the clear winner in most cases today. There are of course exceptions like JAL with their roomy 8 abreast 787 and French Bee with the cramped 10 abreast a350.

Really even when compared to the 777 it’s still a an apples to oranges comparison as the 777 has a greater cargo carrying capacity than the A350.

Sure you say that they're not direct competitors, but why are boing 787 sales falling to the a350. The 777 isn't loosing sales to the a350.

Yes, there is a big difference between them, but I prefer the 787 because I flew in both and it was an excellent experience for both, but I love Boeing and everyone has their own opinion.

As someone who’s flown a variety of planes. I can say that the 787 is slightly comfier than the a350. At least if your talking about the virgin 787 vs airfrance a350

Full disclosure - I was hardcore Boeing for many, many years. I even worked under contract for them on the DCAC project (which converted Boeing's parts inventory program from hand-written yellow tags to barcodes, enabling one to track a part through its whole lifecycle just by wanding the barcode)...

AND, I watched the 787 fail the wing test MULTIPLE TIMES, and get its sorry arse GROUNDED for carrying a tail full of the same dangerous lithium ion batteries that they won't let you put in the cargo hold... and then the MAX debacle... meanwhile, BA exposed me to the A319 and A320, and I had a very nice experience on them...

I am now a hardcore 'Bus rider. I will not fly 787 or Max. Period paragraph. I enjoyed the heck out of my A330 trip to and from Amsterdam last month. I really want to ride an A-380 before they all end up in the desert... (although truth be told I'd really like to ride a 777 before they all go the way of the dodo too. I understand takeoff performance is a Ride...)

I've only flown the 787 but I will say it was the best flying experience I've ever had.

I already knew that the A350 wasn't 787s main competitor. I mean it already makes sense by comparing the specs with 777x, the similarities and differences makes them obvious competitors. On the other hand, if you compare the 787 with the A350 there is a big BIG difference and so therefore they're not meant to be competitors.

I'm a 767 and 777 fanboy. Neither the A350 or 787 do it for me.

You just cannot put one of these two airplanes as "better then the other". They are both amazing machines themselves. They've had their shares of ups, and downs. The reality is that airlines are pretty satisfied with their acquisitions of these types. They've been clambering substantial profits for carriers of any, with any of these in their active fleets.
