Thank you for a video I will probably watch more than once. I’m adding a border to a tablecloth and wondering how I might add embellishments like a row of lace or piping

I’ve been sewing for at least 15 years, but have never done a true flat-felled seam. I’m recreating an out-of-production shirt for a rancher in my area that has flat-felled seams throughout almost the entire construction of the garment. Thank you for providing the variations on flat-felling. I think the second variation will be best for my project.

Thank you for this tutorial, I will definitelly use it in a coat I’m sewing for myself right now. I just have a question. How to work the double lines around straight lines of pattern to not mess the fine fits that are needed in some patterns? And iron pressing is done when the seam is fully finished?

Thank you.....as a new sewer I've been trying to figure out why people are trimming after the first stitch line.....it seemed like a waste of effort, now I see that I don't have to. Excellent, clear, concise tutorial!

Excellent tutorial! So easy to follow. And it includes the measurements in cm/mm which my brain immediately visualises easily! I could see clearly and also the verbal description really helps (call me old school but don't like videos with no verbal instructions). I'm a complete beginner. Just practising on scrap fabrics. Saving this. Will watch it many times until I remember them all.

I have already sewn my seams together so I have to do the mock version but I am afraid the quarter inch side will pull out. This fabric frays like crazy. I think i will use bias tape to extend the upper seam allowance and maybe even have two rows of top stitching. The fabric has vertical stripe and it's a 9+ gored skirt so I think that the two rows of top stitching will look fine.

So what's the formula for adding extra material on one side or the other to compensate for the fact that some of the material disappears into the seam? Do you just add 3/8" on one side?

I always thought that the 'trim the seam allowance' style was a mock flat-fell seam, but ALL other resources consider that the standard flat fell seam. THANK YOU for showing the proper way to do it. Just one other thing that could be said, is when you're adding seam allowance to a pattern block, that you add 1cm on one side and 2.5 cm of SA on the other and overlap by 1.5 cm (is what I figured out through LOTS of thinking and trial and error). I couldn't find this information anywhere.

Hi, I’m working to implement this into the garment after the fitting
Do you know how much seem allowance to allow? I may run some tests
Going from a straight stitch basting, I want to replace with the flat felled seams but I don’t know how far out to start from the basting stitches- if that makes sense

Hi,
For the first e.g., you mentioned needing to adjust the seam allowances (of the pattern) when using the first technique of moving the top fabric over to the left by 3/8”.
How do you adjust the s.a.? Before you cut the fabric from the the pattern, or after, how?

I do agree with others, your videos just get straight to the point! Love it! One quick question... The first seam that you do, on the denim, would overall seam allowance does that create? Im going to use this on a trouser pattern I have, that has a ⅜" seam allowance and wondering if this would work?

Hmm... I think there must be two types of felled seams? I like the idea of catching both layers of fabric for strength. However, I originally learned to fell as a hand stitching technique, as a way to finish seams. The historical hand felled seam does not catch both pieces of seam allowance. In fact, the stitches barely catch any seam allowance at all, similar to a prick stitch from a blind hem.
Just really interesting to lear about! Thank you for adding a mew technique to my stitching arsenal!

Hi I would like o know if ou could do a tutorial on true flat seams when you have to take out some fullness on a pants that already have his existing seams. How do we remake the seams to match the old one.
I’m French I will write in French i think my question will be better.

You mention very quickly on the first new example that you have to adjust the seam allowance but not by how much. Ooops. I missed that piece and the two Jean style jackets I’m making are now off. Dang it. But the seams sure look good. I’ve since tried to figure out how much I would have to add if my current seam allowance is 1cm. Is it .5 cm?

I hope someone sees this in time lol. still at the cutting out pattern pieces onto pattern paper stage of a project that has 1 cm seam allowance and the directions call for surged seam finish, I want to use the felled seam instead, do I just need to add an additional 1 cm so there is a 2 cm seam allowance, or do I need more than that, it is designed to be a pretty loose fitting outfit, but i am a big girl using the largest size on the pattern (and the top end of the measurements for it) so I don't want to loose any of the actual size.
