This is brilliant, THANK YOU!! I spent half the day going around in circles trying to find an answer to exactly this question, and you solved it in 27 minutes. I would never have gone this direction with it on my own. You're amazing.The only catch: it doesn't work in a table because the spill cell won't behave itself inside a table. To anyone who's having this struggle, there is a viable workaround! Discovered after extensive tinkering tonight, here's the gist:

Put the helper spill cell on an entirely separate (non-table) tab, then use index-match in your table's data validation list to refer to that tab. The index-match formula is this:
=INDEX(HelperColumnB,MATCH($A2,HelperColumnA,0))#
assuming A2 in your table is the first thing you need to match, and this is the data validation formula in table cell B2. The key is typing the $A2 yourself instead of clicking in the A2 cell like you might normally, because clicking will insert the table column name instead of just that one cell, and data validation formulas can't use table column names.

Is there a way to make it work in sharepoint excel as well? Im trying to put in the # but it shows error. Is there any workaround?

Is there a way to perform a manual override of the list? For instance if I have a master table with a product ID, Description and price but want to override or edit the description or unit price to account for one off items or a special discount.

This has been extremely helpful. Thank you! But what happens if additional dependent columns are needed? For example, say you wanted to add a column between “Product Category” and “Product Name” called “Brand Name”. And you want “Brand Name” dependent on “Product Category”, but “Product Name” to be dependent on “Brand Name”. The arrays can’t all transpose to the right. Is there a solution for this?

You seem to be making the assumption that your initial order list contains every possible combination of future orders, which makes selecting something new impossible.
