Just watched this movie (can't believe it took me this long) and besides loving it in general, I was really impressed with how well the effects held up! Great job to everyone who worked on it!
Also, that maniacal laughter. 😂

They still use good old FX. Guillermo del Toro, who trained under Dick Smith, loves the practical stuff in his movies, and some of the effects in his films would surprise you in how much of them are actual FX stuff, rather than CGI.
