Watch Before You Buy The NEW Blackmagic 6K Full Frame!

Oh brother... If you want the capabilities of a full frame camera, with the Blackmagic CODEC, then it's a great camera! If it doesn't have the features you happen to be looking for, get something else; it's pretty simple.

Please Blackmagic, if you read this -- the form factor on this thing is killing us out here. We WANT to use it but the lack of modularity (to mount V-mount batteries, on-camera monitor, audio, etc.) it's just not workable anymore. It hurts. For those of us who love BMD's color but can't show up to set looking like we just got our first DSLR out of film school. PLEASE create a box camera which we can customize and it'll crush the Komodo!

If y’all know anything at all about Blackmagic Design is that they live firmware updates. Their camera updates always add functionality and added value. They make great cameras regardless of the complaints about form factor. You can’t beat in any situation what they are giving us for the cost.

Also y’all are missing a big point with the Micro Studio Camera. It’s a 4K M4/3 sensor that shoots 60fps, external BRAW, is crazy small and has a dual gain ISO of 400 and wait for it…3200. This is a much bigger deal than people are making it out to be.

I would love to see a true Pocket Cinema again. Pair that with a pancake lens…
The 16mm original pocket cinema was a blast to use despite its shortcomings.
I would be fine with a M43 sensor, but expect some sort of optical stabilization and a bit more innovation into autofocus.
A stretch goal would be electronic ND, but could live without that.

This is okay for me. I shoot for online promotional videos and never use anything north of 1080. I shoot from belly height 95% of the time and would like a FF to make rooms feel larger. The only thing was me investing in c-fast cards 😬.

I wish it had RF mount, then we could use Canon adaptor with drop in VND.

I think black magic has done okay over the years but now this camera seems kinda ehh, Why would i pick this over the lumix s5 series?

Full frame Open Gate 6K with Resolve Software for $2500. You can always go and spend $50K plus for a similar image from a camera from the competition....

13 is not falling behind. if they are measurments are correct 13 is the same as red cameras. Every camera manufacturer inflates their DR numbers except for arri.
This is a well known practice. So no, it is not falling behind.

All that in mind, would you recommend buying the 6k full frame for a first time camera, or am I better off going with the 6kpro pocket as I had originally planned?

I’m getting it for the open gate option. The 13 stops doesn’t bother me much because I light my scenes.

If they added some focus capabilities like the sony a7cii then it would be a worthy upgrade.

I definitely getting the new Micro for the studio. I do like the Cinema 6k for Anamorphic and CFexpress is a better less $$ card. But I'll wait for the full reviews before ordering. I'm thinking the URSA 12k is the sweet spot still.

Iphone app was easily the most exciting announcement. Its now a proper Blackmagic Pocket Cinema camera.

Give the price, the spec is still pretty amazing. If it is E mount, I very likely buy one. I would assume some Sony user would buy one either. but L mount. I have no intention to invest any L mount lens and I have no EF mount either. So I can not buy this camera.

I agree Michael, that camera body is awful. What about the battery? The frame rates too are a little under cooked. I know open gate is awesome but a lot of us would prefer 17:9 120 fps.

Until Cine-D lab tests this cameras actual dynamic range Ill holdy opinion on that fromt; however, many of the cameras claiming to have more dynamic range at a similar price point actually don't once all aspects of their images are compared on equal ground. For example the A7S III Only has 12.4 stops of dynamic range at a s/n ratio of .5 and that's with it's always on noise reduction. Which means if one looks at the pocket 6k pro and sees a dynamic range of 11.8 stops with a s/n ratio of.5 but without any NR, and even simple NR will increase a camera by 1 stop the pocket 6k and 6k pro world achieve at least 12.8 stops of dynamic range with equivalent NR applied to it. In fact Cine-Ds charts show the patch range for the pocket 6k / 6k pro are larger than the A7S III implying it has more recovery potential. CVP even achieved about a half a stop more recovery in their comparisons tests. My point is claimed dynamic range is not actual dynamic range. So until this new cameras sensor is lab tested in an equivalent state we don't know how this camera really preforms.

This camera is a slap in the face to all those who were expecting a box camera, full frame, internal ND's, higher dynamic range, global shutter, etc. It's like the design went backwards. And it continues to be this poorly balanced monstrosity. Blackmagic totally ignored the wishes of all end users. Kinefinity did a better job in implementing a lot of the wishes their loyal followers had.

I will definitely buy the camera. The full frame alone is enough unless there is no improvement in low light.

The DP who shot the promo John Brawley hinted in the forums that there might be a new camera soon (like next year soon) in the box style with the new sensor and lens mount
