From seeing the flash to lighting the object you've lost 2-3 seconds. Also, there is a possibility the fence can still be static within the 1-2 seconds from being shut off. So in this scenario you're better off not thinking like Albert Einstein and find a more suitable escape route.

Easy, chop up the fuse into 60 pieces, light it on fire, and blow on it. It should be a short burst of fire for about 2 seconds if you use it good. If you do everything right then you should be able to burn the guard alive and steal his watch.

You can also push the guard onto the electric fence then hold him there until the electric fence runs out of electricity, then slip away.

Of course there is the possibility of being able to start a prison riot with the lighter as a weapon.

Easier than my method which was do the 30 second trick and then light both ends and middle of fuse two relighting the middle each time a half burns out

My first thought was to time the fuses together and use the lighter as a weight to time it based on pendulum swings, but the lengths of the fuses isn't given.

As someone who works in a prison I can tell you the staff there are the real prisoners. The prisoners are treated way better than us.

The real question is why I have a lighter in prison!?

I took "burns irregularly" to mean that it burns irregularly with respect to itself, so if I light it from one end, it will burn in 60 seconds, if I light it from the other end, it will burn in 60 seconds, but that I can't assume it will burn in 60 seconds with the same distribution function as if I burned it from the other end. In that sense, burning "irregularly" would mean I can't assume a fuse burnt from both ends would last 30 seconds.

How do you know they light for 30 seconds on both ends if the fuses burn irregularly? That is assuming something that is not directly stated in the riddle. Or am I missing something here?
