Can a photocell base go bad and short out the photocell? I recently bought a new photocell to replace a 10 year-old one on the side of my house that had stopped working. As soon as I twisted it into the base there was a short "POW!" sound and I was back at square one. The original base is at least 15 years old

The power should go to the Photocell first, not the switch.

The way you have it wired, you are switching the photocell on and off repeatedly, which will cause wear on the photocell and diminish its useful life.

Take power to the photocell, then to the switch, then to the load.
