Would you buy a 2017 Toyota Prius? Or would you buy a 2020 Toyota Corolla hybrid? Both have less than 25,000 miles. Thank you

Well, people like me that buy used cars still need these videos several years down the line, so thanks Matt. This is still too expensive for me, so I got a gen 3. If Toyota had said it was a phenomenal automatic transmission with a car wrapped around it, I’d have bought it ten years earlier. The ‘droning’ under hard acceleration is actually exactly the same as a normal automatic except the rpm is constant and there’s no ‘peak’ to be reached. Once you realise what Toyota has done, is to simply make the petrol engine run at about: idle; 1/4 speed; 1/2 speed; 3/4 speed; full speed; you realise it’s because petrol engines are quite poor in terms of what they offer. 80% of the energy put in, comes out as heat, you only get 20% out as power to a shaft. Petrol engines, make great boilers.

The transmission has no cones, pulleys or friction faces to wear, the e-CVT is robust, not fragile and nothing like CVT at all, so it’s a misnomer really, in some ways. Doesn’t even have a ‘slush box’ or torque convertor ( sort of a liquid clutch) with its impellers. Much better. Never had an automatic that didn’t develop a fault by about 130,000 miles. This e-CVT only has an emergency clutch ‘in case’ and in normal use, there are only constantly-meshed gears. Keep changing the engine oil, every 7,000 miles max or less, keep changing the transmission fluid every 45,000 miles or less, and there isn’t too much to sweat about. This is the most reliable car probably, I ever bought. Sure, it still has to surpass my VW Passat auto 4-speed’s 193,000 miles, but that was a landmark era, before DPF’s strangled diesels.

This car might fail, but it’s designed and built not to, and every indication is it’s one of the best engineered cars in the world. Original transmission idea was in Berkeley University USA, then GM bought it, then sold the patent to Toyota. It is basically a differential, as far as I can see - the three inputs/outputs are the giveaway - Motor-Generator 1, MG2, and the petrol engine, interplay to provide the final driveshaft power and speed. It’s a marvel. Take care all.

A taxi driver drove me in one yesterday. Very impressive showing 72 mpg. Does the Corolla 1.8 have the same power train ?

I own an MR two spider and a Toyota Prius. They are purpose built vehicles. They’re both made in Japan, and I love them both equally.

How come my American 2017 Prius only gets 47 Miles per gallon while you get 86?!?!? WTF??? ( and don't condescend to tell me the difference between a British gallon and a US gallon. It still doesn't come near to explaining the disparity)

I have been driving Prius' since 2004 and have had models II, III and IV. The first two had about 250,000 km (about 155,300 miles) on the clock when I changed vehicles. I'm currently driving my second Prius IV, the first of which was unfortunately totaled when someone rear-ended me in a traffic jam on the Autobahn.
I regularly take longer trips across Europe. On the last trip through Germany, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Czech Republic and back to northern Germany, the car made 6,500 km (4,400 miles) with an average consumption of 4.5 l/100 km (approx. 53 MpG).
Needless to say, I never had any technical problems with any of the Prius'.

The reason why Toyota uses NiMH batteries in certain markets is because of colder temperatures.

2010 Golf has the isofix attachpoints hidden in the seat... 2017 Toyota: Let's just put them where you can see them all the time and hide them with a cover you can easily loose. It's just killing me how asian cars get small stuff wrong so often. I really like the Golf for it's usability. Someone actually has designed it to be used by people! Sure in the reliability department Toyota wins hands down. But they really should watch thing like: The seat belt doesn't get jammed behind the seat when you unfold the back seat... Small things but makes you less needing to think about what you are doing.

Litterly the only reason I don't wanna drive that car is because I don't like to have my speed meter and stuff in the middle of my dashboard but right in front of me. (Which you can basically get cause you can get head-up display)

I will just get a 1991 Honda Civic as my daily which has a 1.5L engine power steering, auto transmission, A/C, 4 doors and a decent boot. It's also light on fuel, reliable, cheap to maintain and cheap to buy.

I never understand why people hate on it so much. It's a really reliable, comfortable, relaxed, economical way to transport people. It's not fast, stylish or whatever but it isn't meant to be - that's not it's job. About a bazillion minicab and Uber drivers know this.

It may not be right for you - but doesn't make it bad, and probably it's perfect for someone else.
