I think this movie was using Ebola as a basis for the disease. Except changing it to be a parasite. Ebola does look like worms, but that's about the only thing tying it to parasites. The way it looks.
But that was probably enough to use the hype (which was admittedly diminished by 2016) of Ebola to make bank on this movie.
Thus why it's called viral and everyone thinks it's a virus despite it being a parasite.
