I know people say it doesn't make sense that the Velaryons are black because it makes it too obvious that Rhaenyra's sons are bastards, but I think that works for this show, and particuarly this scene. People aren't plotting against Rhaenyra simply because of rumors and speculation but because of how blatantly she ignores tradition and westeros' values and gets away with it because she's the heir. To people like Alicent who were forced into a life they hate because of those values or Vaemond who sees his family about to lose power because of these lies, to be told that they're insane or disrespectful for speaking the obvious truth would cause them to be bitter or to snap and forfeit their life.
