What's the first thing you do after installing Proxmox?

Thanks for the video. I notice that I don't have to set VLAN Aware to yes, if you assign the VM a vlan id then it just works regardless. I have pfSense running in a zfs replicated high availability proxmox cluster and it's working fine routing vlan traffic as well as functioning as a DHCP server for each subnet assocated with the VLAN. However when I change VLAN Aware to yes, it pfSesns router no longer routes VLAN traffic, but when i turn it back off it resumes routing it. .. weird. Another problem I am having is if I create a VM using a NIC with a VLAN tag, it works fine as long as I dont' have it running on the same node which pfsense is runnign on. As soon as I migrate that VLAN VM to the node that pfsense is runnign on, the pfsense no longer routes. And the only solution at that point is to shutwon all the VM's on that node and reboot the proxmox node.. then it works again, so long as I don't spin up the VM witht he VLAN tag on that same node. I have no idea what's wrong but it's preventing me from creating any VM's with VLANs, which sucks. Hope to resolve this soon.

How did you know at 5AM I was staring at my new Proxmox CLi in my PC. Yes I used the browser on laptop. FYI did you know about the Proxmox ACS patch? I did do the update from the GUI. 🤟No BS to the point content there is only a had few such content creators. NVMEs are new to me and I have 1 & 2 old hdds i hosed & spent too much time trying to wipe those hdds clean, messrf them up w/ gparted I'm not familiar with trying to install grub slackware I gave up on those hdds, love fdisk.. First think to do is remove local-lvm and increase size of local like lvremove /dev/pve/data lvremove /dev/pve/data resize2fs /dev/mapper/pve-root

So I selected my only disk as partition disk, minus one single GB. I couldnt find a reason not to.. I asked chatGPT whether there was a reason not to do so if all I was going to use was Proxmox.
Is this wrong? Can't I store VMs and whatnot within the partition space as well?

If you want to prepare a Linux VM as a template, you should check out cloud-init software.

I was going to suggest that you use Cloud Init to simplify the setup of cloned templates, but then I saw that this video was 2 years old (it just showed up in my recommended list) I think I probably learned about Cloud Init from one of your other videos that you did more recently.

I installed the virtio drivers in windows and in the proxmox vm config file I added this line, "virtio: /dev/sdb1". When I login to windows, it doesn't show the drive. The "diskpart" shows that there is a partition mounted but its not showing in the "list volume" command. Anyone facing similar issue?

Regarding the LACP point why don’t you run iperf with different settings to see how a link aggregated connection performs vs two individual ones?

First thing I do is pull up @TechnoTim video and fallow along pausing as needed to set up my proxmox and vms as needed. Your a life saver man. Between you and @NetworkChuck I have repurposed some older equipment to the point it is now invaluable. Proxmox running PFSense + TruNAS Scale + Ubuntu ++ PlexServer ++ SMBA ++ Home Security Video/Audio/Alarm direct linked to my cell phone.

This screams for Ansible.

I gotta question: I installed proxmox on a test server with 4x ssd's in raid10, but inside proxmox i see only 4 seperate SSD's. Assuming i've missed a step?
edit: as i've watched more, i see that creating a software raid10 ZFS vs Hardwrae Raid 10 seems to be the inclination?

Proxmox 8 uses a different kernel and you have to use bookworm instead of buster when changing the sources.list.

Not sure if anyone answered it below, but the ports needing to be next to each other is inside they're using basically breakout cables and the aggregator internal requires and link agg to be connected. This is common where you'll see inside switches that have sage 100G inside but then break it out to four 25G. Similar for other topos.

I've installed and provisioned proxmox 3 times. 1st time in a simulated (VM) environment on a desktop to see if it was the right tool for the job. 2nd time on a 4-node cluster of IvyBridge generation fat-twin servers from supermicro that I bought used as a proof of concept, homelab, training, and testing environment. 3rd time on a 6-node cluster assembled from EPYC ROME supermicro servers that is used as a production environment for a mid-size company. The original virtualized proof of concept is long gone but the installs on the 2 clusters have been running solid ever since their original installation years ago. I don't understand how you could have to reinstall this 20 times over the last year unless you're really trying to break it.

for your wiping disk/partition, you could user sgdisk -Z which is faster, or wipe them via the webui of your node under the submenu Disk

I'm installing the new version for the first time on an HP server with 4 300G disks, I want to know the recommended option for using the disks, keep proxmox installed on a single disk and use the rest in pool zsf mode for the vms?
What option do you recommend?
