I am really not trying to be sexist, but she likely only got 6 years because she is a woman. I spent a career in law enforcement and a good deal of that career as a detective. I have worked quite a few homicide cases and I can tell you that I cannot think of a single case I was involved in where a female got a really harsh sentence. I did work a case where a mother was charged with murder for allowing her 13-year-old son the snort methadone, which killed him. She was partying with her 13-year-old son and some adults. She was convicted and sentenced to thirty years and a day. However, the Kentucky State Supreme Court overturned her murder conviction after two years in prison. Their reasoning was that she would had to have known how much methadone it would have taken to kill the 13-year-old and since she was not a chemist and could not have known, she was wrongfully convicted of murder. The supreme court overturned the murder conviction, but did say she was guilty of reckless homicide, which carried a sentence of only 5 years. She was given credit for time served and was released from prison.

The crazy thing about the Supreme Court's decision in the case was that she was not charged with intentional murder, because it was not likely her intent to kill the child. She was charged with wanton murder. She partied with the child regularly. Social services and I worked very hard together to take him away from his mother because he showed up to middle school drunk from partying with his mother the night before. We knew she allowed him to consume the alcohol, but he would not tell on her. He was sent to juvenile detention. He was brought to court on a Wednesday and, against mine and social services' pleas to the judge, he was released to his mother's custody. The following morning I was dispatched to a local hospital ER, where he was pronounced dead from the methadone overdose. If it had been his father who allowed him to inject the methadone, he would still be in prison.
