I realize this was mostly staged and I have been a huge fan of these guys since season 7 of top gear.

That said…there is only ONE recorded example of a pirate burying their gold. Captain Kidd, buried some of his gold on Gardiners Island and made a map of how to find it. However the treasure was found within days of his arrest and he only buried it because he had the permission of the islands owner.
