Using modern day nation states is kind of misleading (i.e. Constantinople Turkey) but I can see it was easier than mentioning all the empires, kingdoms, regions etc the cities were able to flourish in at the time.

Tokyo certainly has a large population, but it is not as large as the value shown in this graph. This is the Tokyo metropolitan area, which is separate from Tokyo Prefecture. As a Japanese person, I would like to say this.

I'd like to remark that I think that there is a mistake in that, in the Iberian Peninsula, during the whole time of Arab rule (up to 5 centuries in the South), only very small areas are shown to use the Arabic script. The Latin script was gradually replaced by Arabic after the Muslim conquest and later it was gradually replaced by Latin as the Christian kingdoms were advancing to the South.
