American here, try having to read extremely scary and difficult books in middle school and then have to write a 20 page book of your own!

American english tests seem so easy in comparison to British English tests (as a British person)

In Germany our English exams look like this: Number one: Summarise x chapter of x book.
Number two: Write a characterisation about x character / analyse …/ interpret ….
Number three: compare the given text to book x and write an argumentation about x based on material we dealt in class with

We have 90 minutes to finish all three tasks, usually you have to finish 15 minutes earlier so you can count the amount words but we are actually allowed to bring the book. However before we can start writing out teacher checks every single book to see if anything is written inside it and if that’s the case it will be taken away and you really have to work with your memories. This also takes some time so I usually had only 60 minutes to finish my exam

To be fair, my one of my teachers tried one test, with students filling in the blank of how many times a specific character sneezed or coughed. I know that she wanted us to read, but I don't think that was the right incentive!

Anyway, I got like a 40% on it, and the teacher, (thankfully,) stopped using that method!
