It sucks that the writers just could not deal with an enemy that isn't a person, that you couldn't talk to and interact with. The Borg are like a space virus, infecting worlds, replicating and moving on to infect new worlds. You either wipe them out or be wiped out. They are like the Terminator, they don't feel, they can't be reasoned with and they will never stop until they are either wiped out or they run out of planets to infect. The need to have an individual, a Borg queen to interact with, just ruined a really interesting concept.

Hard to believe that in the vastness of the cosmos, the most frightning being the Federation would face is Borg. Which was defeated by Data by implanting sleep in their subroutine.

So what quadrant were they sent to? If it was the delta then surely it woulf take longer than 2 years to get home.

Wouldnt you expect Gainen to be a little more afraid than her casual demeanour when seeing the botg?

This first encounter was the beginning of the end for the Borg, not the Federation. In hindsight, the Borg should have just looked the other way.

I watched TNG long after VOY, but just as this scene I'll never forget their first encounter with the Borg. How Janeway goes from relaxed to "Red alert. All stop, shields to maximum, stand-by all weapons!" in one heart-beat when the darkened cube appears on screen. And young me didn't even know anything about the Borg at the time, but damn, I was immidiately on the edge of my seat. The Borg easily are Scifi's most scary enemy with an incredibly effective introduction.

I have a question that maybe someone here can help me with. Why did Guinan leave 10 forward, with its huge panoramic windows facing the Borg cube, to go the tiny office to "monitor what's going on?" Why didn't she say "dude...it's right outside my effin widow!" :D

You know, this is the first time we ever saw a "Borg"... which is now not only a pop culture term but something we as civilazation are using. If we ever meet something like cyborg aliens we will use and remember this term. And Star Trek did that several times. The Ion Engine term is only one example. Somewhat sad that Star Trek never tried to go on to be a more scientific show. I would pay really, REALLY alot money to watch something like The Expanse but in the Star Trek universe. Perhaps there is a chance for that because usually pop culture is going from one extreme to another and because we had alot pretty esoteric stuff now it will perhaps come back to the other edge in time.

Everyone points out how this gave clues to what the borg would become, but missed one thing in the two part episode. At one point Guinan advised Riker to do what he needed and seemed to not care about Picard. As would be shown several seasons later, Guinan already knew that Picard was going to survive this, because Picard goes back in time, later on in the series, and meets her in her past. She knew he had not done this yet, so had to survive the borg. It was kind of like knowing the future, but not being able to directly let anyone know.

"Guinan, your people have been in this part of the Galaxy. What can you tell us?"
"Nothing specific. Only vague warnings. If I were you, I would start back now."
"Good advice, but do you have any informa..."
"No information. No names. No descriptions. I am a mysterious enigma."
"But it might help us survive."
[Guinan waves fingers in the air] "mysssterioussss..."

You'd think that Guinan would have thought to mention the Borg when she said they should start heading back immediately.

Then having her go to the view screen when she could see it clearly from her window instead of saying 'I'm looking at it right now'. Didn't notice or much think of the incongruity in original viewing.

Oh well, it's still a classic among ALL Star Trek episodes, despite Whoopi.

I like the detail that Geordi is the first to "see" the Borg here; they are physically menacing, but he's the only person on board who would be able to immediately identify that they are devoid of any internal organics, and even he isn't sure how to describe what he's seeing other than simply "an intruder".
