Another wrench in the situation is Muk, a much less common and much more purple substabce that isn't quite as damaging as either

I’ve always thought of it this way:

Gloom is super concentrated, almost has to be directly from the source. When Ganondorf was sealed so were most of his powers but his existence was still prominent enough to have the calamity. This would be an attempt from the sealed Ganondorf to gain a body, as he was making one when Link interrupted him, and break the seal himself. Seeing as Ganondorf was unconscious, his hatred unconsciously turned into Calamity Ganon and it was made out of the strongest stuff Ganondorf had, gloom. But, seeing as the gloom became less concentrated as all his powers had while sealed, it started becoming more viscous and didn’t deal the same type of damage, but since it stuck it dealt more damage. It still tried to make the roots but it only turned into pillars, and the gloom hands morphed into the eye thingies. Once Calamity Ganon failed, something shook Hyrule castle just right to break through to Ganondorf’s chambers. Could have been Zelda’s sealing power, or reconstruction was happening and the wrong grate was opened. Either way, something happened to key Rauru’s stone in to Zelda existing (since it fell towards her).
Then gloom starts slowly fading into the world. There’s a small amount until Ganondorf is unsealed and then it’s a massive burst of more gloom. And the only reason malice disappeared is because the thing making it did, Calamity Ganon. There was no more use for malice if it couldn’t make a body to unseal Ganondorf.

But this is just what I think, if it helps any then awesome but if it doesn’t that’s fine

This has been my biggest problem with TOTK, the massive discontinuity of story. No one sees Gloom and says, "Wow, this reminds me of Malice". No one comments on the disappearance of Shekiah technology throughout the region. Almost no one recognizes any of Link's actions from the previous games at all up to and including saving the region. It feels like they didn't want this to be a sequel narratively but had to make it one to reuse all the models from the first game.

When it comes to Gloom and Malice, I rather appreciate the thematic implication that apathy and despair constitute a more dangerous and permanently damaging force than active malevolence.

My idea is that malice is less powerful and potent than gloom due to it coming from calamity ganon and not the dehydrated man himself.

The way i see it, Malice and Gloom are like the blue and yellow parts of a flame. Malice is the less hot, yellow part that makes up most of a flame. And Gloom is the very hot, blue part that makes up the very bottom of a flame.
Malice is thicker than Gloom like how the yellow part of a flame makes up most of the fire. Gloom is thinner, but much more deadlier than Malice; like how the blue part of a flame is very little, but much hotter and dangerous than the yellow part.

Someone pointed out that Malice is much thicker and clumps up into almost solids, as if it is a much older more gelatin-like substance. Opposed to Gloom which is red and more liquid, like fresh blood in its prime. Therefore Malice is just Ganons blood that as aged and is slowly drying/solidifying, and Gloom is his blood that is now freshly reborn and coming back to life.

diamonds look different because you can fuse them to weapons in totk, so they made them look like blades. i love how nintendo has completely destroyed the foundation that timeline theorists stand on. you all have no idea what to do with a story that is self contained.

malice is kinda a less concentrated and less powerful version of gloom, as it came to be from calamity ganon, who was released from ganondorf being sealed by rauru for 10,000 years. Gloom has the ability to destroy weapons and empower monsters and decay the health of link abd also make people ill while malice has the ability to harm link temporarily and corrupt creatures (like how it corrupted naydra) or machinery to create blights or corrupt divine beasts like the corrupted mini guardian in aoc or as shown in AoC, malice could be used as a construct to make monsters like the champion and link clones (that's if age of calamity is considered canon). Malice went away because cal ganon was defeated by Link and Zelda and returned in Totk as Gloom because Ganondorf was back with his full power so Malice was upgraded to gloom.

If you don’t understand what other people are saying in the comments and don’t wanna read a paragraph, look at this.

Calamity Ganon = Half Normal Ganon

Calamity Ganon= Malice

Normal Ganon= Gloom

Normal Ganon and Gloom is stronger, and Calamity Ganon and Malice are just half the power of Malice, or just weaker.

Personally I think that ganondorf in the first King of Hyrule time that may have been gloom still but then when the king sealed him away it weakened or banished some sort of the gloom and turned it into malice but when ganondorf reawoke The malice was way more concentrated so it was called gloom again and that's also how the weapons disintegrated mostly

A possible reason why malice does damage at a faster rate that gloom is that Calamity Ganon is an encarnation of hatred, while Ganondorf is much more cold and calculating in comparison. Also I think I read somewhere in Creating a Champion that malice was mixed with water. So it is possible malice is just a diluted version of gloom.

it would make sense that gloom is just stronger malice, as ganondorf wielded it during the imprisoning war and it started appearing again when Rauru's seal was weakening. Calamity Ganon is considerably weaker than Ganondorf seeing how it could barely manifest into a real organism, malice being just damaging instead of life-restricting just proves the point of it being weaker. Also the more red hue signifies the power difference but thats even more pure speculation on my part

@esmooth919

I feel like gloom is an evolution of malice, since Calamity was borne from Ganondorf to begin with. He was still under the castle when Calamity/Dark Beast broke out. And as we see in the intro, red stuff was still seeping out from under the castle after we defeated the Calamity, which is why Link and Zelda went to investigate in the first place. But we also inadvertently found out about the Imprisoning War in the process.

My take is that Malice is supposed to be the biomass of Clammy Gan, what with the sludginess of the stuff kinda resembles mucus and the pillars resembling bones and also the eyes (apparently Clammy Gan can see thru those). Also, iirc, malice is supposed to be a substance that's mixed with water, kinda like how most lifeforms are. I'm also led to believe the monsters are also made of Malice, since they explode into the purple mist in both games.

As for similarities, Gloom and Malice can take over technology, like with the Guardians and the Siezed Construct. If Malice was also made of Gloom and Gloom allows for the seizing of bodies, then it'd probably have enough to take over a lifeless body, like a giant robot or even a corpse (stals, skeletal horses, Gibdos)

If Malice is a biomass made of hatred, then Gloom would probably be pure concentrated hatred.

Aight hear me out; the viscosity of certain substances can change depending on its water content. Malice is thicker and more viscous than gloom because ganondorf is dehydrated during botw. Once he gets that that sweet sweet h2o, his malice becomes gloom once again.

I mean if i was a gloomy person, being dehydrated would turn me from irritable to being downright malicious. Ganondorf was grumpy because he was thirsty.

Malice is described as water tainted by Ganon’s power. Gloom is just some mysterious substance Ganondorf wields as a weapon. Malice is more dangerous to just about everyone, so in Age of Calamity, we only see the tougher enemies give themselves to it, as opposed to almost everything in the Depths using Gloom as a weapon. Malice is a sludge fuled by pure anger, rage and… well, malice. Gloom on the other hand, is a substance used strategically, not just thrown randomly in small quantities, but thrown everywhere to disorient Hyrule.
