My introduction to Anansi was from the PBS kids show Wishbone. My mom has all the episodes on dvd and my kids are almost old enough to appreciate the show lol.

A few assumptions are made here from a Western mindset. West African traditions especially religious ones, were told orally and by tribal Asante elders in Twi. Which Dutch, Portuguese, and English slavers rarely learned Twi, and it was only for trade. They didn’t want not care to understand the religious traditions from a group of people that they thought heathenous barbarians (and still today there are few historians of West African traditions and cultures in education.)A group they came to either enslave or convert. In any case, the fact that the Asante never wrote anything down was a trope used by the West to devalue African religions, because many did not use a writing system. So be careful that you don’t inadvertently fall into that mistake. However, you should speak with more scholars on West African deities. Anansi wasn’t worshipped strictly because calling the god to directly intervene in your life(which is why you would pray/worship to a god anyway. You would worship them for their function/aspect that they reign over.) would be calling a trickster god who is known to weave lies and deceit into your life. But the Asante did see them selves as worshipping Anansi, because he is also the god of stories. And since elders in Asante tribes told their traditions orally, meant Anansi was the god over the tradition of telling the stories of all the gods. Literally, any time a story is told you are worshipping Anansi. Which funny enough was why as a trickster god, like Hermes is with messages. If someone forgot one of the stories revolving around the Asante pantheon, people would say it’s the fault of the trickster god trying to trip them up. As a test to see if they really know the story they’re telling. This serves as an explanation for the human nature of sometimes forgetting a story, and then embellishing some of the details that you don’t remember. But for the Asante, it doesn’t get much higher than him. He wove the first stories of the world into existence with his web as a spider.
