Sony PS3 "Fat" YLOD Repair - Faulty Console Restoration

Tip for soldering caps: you can scratch the middle pad between the TOKIN solder pads and have the negative pad soldered onto there. I did that on a CECHC04 just recently. (and before anyone jumps to scold me - I have had pulled the syscon log - 1001 and 1002s only.)

You mentioned the RRD of the 360. Did you ever fix one and find out exactly what the issue was? I have a 360 that was repaired by MS and after about 6 months it returned. But not fully. After getting the RRD, again I shut down and restarted and it kept going. But I Kinda gave up and got an Xbox One. So haven't used the 360 since. Just wondering your opinion and findings. Thanks 👍

Great to see a YLOD PS3 good as new. I'm still scarred from it happening to me back in the day. I remember playing Lost Planet 2 when it first came out, when all of a sudden "black screen blinking yellow light" during an online match out of nowhere. I had the launch model with BC for PS2.

What solder tip did you use to remove the terminal from the pad?

Can you give some tips on how to desolder the terminals? I don’t want to use a heat gun and wicking only worked for one of my terminals. For the life of me I can’t get the other terminals to stick to the wick. I also don’t have a thin solder tip to slice it off like you did

Good job man! I'm doing this Fix actually in mine! But, it's really hard job to take the noken/tokin caps. I watched that It can works easy with a wood chisel😅 i realized after get a mess with my Mainboard hahaha. I tried to get off with a knife so it's a bad idea. Micro caps and a voltage regulator flew away😅

On my PS3, I removed the motherboard and any attached plastic. Placed in oven to reflow solder. Our machine solder was experiencing heat stress fractures from frequent on/off. Repair went well and lasted for weeks. Each subsequent repair lasted about half as long. Found that if you leave the machine ON indefinitely it doesn't experience the heat/cool stresses any longer.

What materials did you use? I was planning to fix my ps3 XD

Nice. I could do with stripping my PS3 down and giving it a good internal clean before it packs up.

Watched your Lynx II video, a very nice refurb which didn't work since I suspect 9V has already fried the cpu. The algorithim recomended me this video, and I have a PS3 sitting in my connection with this same issue. Might get to it one day. Subscribed. Very nice videos, thanks. I recently got a Lynx II, no power, and wired 5V onto the capacitor and got it to power on. So i've ordered all the components to reburb mine as you did yours.

Im late, but that broken piece is a foot of the disk drive.

I assume this repair would be relatively similar for the CECHB01? I got this model recently and the system will start and play for various periods of time before completely freezing and discoloring the screen

Had a similar experience with the screw getting stripped. It was actually around the same location lol.
