I was so SHOCKED when I learned all the meta stuff was fake. I fell in love with this story (ironically, thanks to my dad reading it to me) when I was, like, 8. I was FIFTEEN when I learned that all the stuff added was completely fake.
The joking section added to later versions about Steven King being the reason Buttercup's Baby, the sequel, was never abridged is the reason I had a lifelong vendetta against that man.

You cannot express how thrilled I was to hear the words "I'm talking about the book 'The Princess Bride'"
I fucking LOVE this book, and it hurts me to no end when people have no idea about all the awesome stuff in it because they're too caught up with the movie.

Considering my resolution for 2024 is to write more... I like your comment to "Write the story that matters to me. The one that yearns to be told"

Ha! The Princess Bride... I remember reading that after being the last person in my high school social circle to see the movie... I opened the book and was like, "Okay, I'm down, I remember the framing scenario in the movie, but what IS this??" I remember checking the spine of the library book to make sure it was fiction and not some weird form of literary criticism... although if I had my own library I'd be tempted to classify it as literary humor: 817.5, I assume. I had also thus far missed out on the greats of Jewish-American comedy, although I had some vague notion of "a sort of Mel Brooks vibe." Definitely the kind of humor I'd recommend to someone over 30, or even 40, rather than a teen or twentysomething. One of the things that continued to remind me of that book through my high school and college years was that it also parodies what it's like to read one of the "great classics" nowadays, and to find it dull, badly paced, and problematic... Or just weird, as one's experience of The Princess Bride will be if you read it after the movie, without any idea what you're in for!

I think one reason to write something so balls-deep in balderdash is because by doing that, you can attempt to distill the general truth behind an experience... sometimes the factual details of any one particular event can make it hard to see its parallels and wider meanings or relevance. It's like how myths tell of things that never happened, but through them we can see what happened all the time, to the people who first told them.

If you like the way the author incorporates the life of a fake author into his book you should read “The life and opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman” it drags a bit on unimportant story lines but the concept is there

The Princess Bride is a excellent and timeless film. Judging by the descriptions here of the book though, that might be too confusing for me to properly appreciate but I might eventually read it anyway.

This is such a fascinating way to see writing. I've been writing a.. to call it a story would be both an overstatement and understatement, a world of events, a history book of fiction for several years and the thwarted romantic in me tells me the deeper I get, the more I know it will likely never be a cohesive series, but it's mine, and there's nothing like it. if I ever manage to make it into a story, it will mean the world to me, but truthfully it already does. While I've spent so much time fleshing it all out, the lesson of this video and its topic is right. Write the things that truly matter, the things that have the impact, the feelings, and let the work I've already done in the details rest beneath it as a foundation, unseen until needed and wanted, because it's art, if i spend a lifetime trying to find the best canvas, mix the right paint and a perfect muse, the idea will die along with me long before i ever bring it into being.

The princess bride is my father’s favorite movie. I grew up watching princess movies and loved them but then my father introduced me to that movie. I had become older and wasn’t interested in such a childish title. When I watched it and it captured my imagination. I’ve always enjoyed stories but I refused to read/watch stories that I considered childish. Now as an adult I enjoy reading children’s books that are written in a manner that an adult can enjoy just as much as a child can.

My personal belief is that a story must have a happy ending, but if it can't then it must at least have a hopeful one. I suppose that falls in line with what you said about life being unfair, so embrace hope and meaningful moments; fantasy need not be reality, but rather it can be all the parts you love about reality given wings that take them and the reader to Heaven, if only for a short while.

I wrote in the past and it was fun at the time, even though I never finished a story. It's been years since. I've been meaning to say something for a little while now, but I don't know what, or how to express myself. As someone who's analytical, emotional expression and feelings/desires/wants/needs don't come naturally in terms of becoming consciously aware of them. Any tips for the emotionally repressed?

As I remember correctly a "second book" was written in true Goldman fashion. It was essentially a first chapter where everything goes wrong in even worse ways than the end of the first book and sets up a rediculously premise for how the story will progress and then just stops.

I have never been a romantic. Just am not. I don't like to hear my own voice thrown back at me. I simply don't.

The worst kind of mirror is only an echo. Diminished, diminishing, and gone. Unfortunately I fear no one seeks to understand that moment.

You are home again... I don't know why you ever thought otherwise. This is where his discontent comes from.
