Has DLR had TBI? I don’t recall ever hearing/reading anything about a fall or accident but whenever I’m listening to him speak, as intelligent as he is; I always think “this dude has whacked his hard at some point in his life”. Stroke maybe? Drugs? Just curious.

Ok- That’s interesting ! Make Six improvised guitar solos and record them. Then pan back-and-forth between them at random and then record them as a whole unit then go back and figure it out and make that the guitar solo going forward.
Who thought of that craziness Templeton or Mr. EVH ? Randy Rhodes wrote his solos note for note start to finish. Using Calculated music theory. I would say Eddie is the genius. Randy Rhodes is a well educated musician.

I used to hang out with Eddy and he always told me not to listen to Dave, that he was a big story telling BS'er.

For me, Eddie is the greatest rock guitar player ever, and that is not even my style of playing. My favorite players are David Gilmour and Mark Knopfler. On a snowy afternoon returning from school, Charlie Burchill, Stuart Adamson, the Edge and Andy Summers are what feel like a dry, comforting warm blanket in my life. But Eddie was the best.

The average listener (non-musician) thinks all songs are played live in a studio. The clueless ones are stunned to be told someone plays multiple parts at once. Of course Eddie did comped solos as his career went on. We all knew things like Mean Street or Hear About It Later were not done in one pass. But sometimes it’s good to put together a solo like that. On Fair Warning Eddie really took that to the max which is why those solos are so disjointed but so interesting.

If you make an interview, you don't have to worry about running out of questions or content - if the interview is with DLR.

Eddie Van Halen was a guitar master. He wrote his solos methodically.
I think Roth is talking incorrectly about "comping" where you would play the exact same solo numerous times and maybe on track 1 the beginning was stronger but on track 2 the ending was stronger so you would combine the best of both or multiple takes of the same solo.
Eddie did not "wing it" in the studio.

There are at least 1000 guitar players in history more talented than Eddie. Unfortunately they chose to do something relevant instead of becoming a guitar God for losers.

So glad he let Dave talk! I love the Joe Rogan experience but anytime he has a guest on,either him or one of his side kicks,is constantly interrupting the guest and not letting the story finish!

I wonder if David Gilmour used this method to create his solos. I think he actually wrote them instead.

Seems like DLR trying to diminish the global reverence for EVH's creativity on guitar. Trying to make out like production folks took random EVH parts and pieced them together to make guitar work fit a song. You can watch many many interviews with DLR and EVH where Eddie has to correct Dave's memory on how things exactly were. Most of which tended to inflate Dave's looking like the maestro, when we all know who was the musical genius in the VH sound.

Yeah just a huge Van Halen fan since 1979 when I was 11. Lol, you're right I could listen to Dave all the time. Although many just considered him a buffoon and, of course, he could be lol, David was and is actually highly intelligent.

It's basically vocal comping but for guitar solos. It's common for singers to record multiple takes and piece the best bits together, but in this case it's just guitar solos instead of vocals.

It is also true that Eddie would just rip into an improvised live solo on a live take and, if needed, would track a rhythm part later.
This is particularly true of their earlier albums.
