I enjoyed the heck out of the first 40minutes. The first 40min are brilliant. But oh boy does it slow down by the time we get to the 3hour mark.

I am planning to watch this film soon, but am surprised so much money was put into it and not much promotion and Joaquin did no press for it. I saw other cast members and Ari promoting on some talk shows but no Joaquin and this was before the strike. I thought that was strange but even though it isn't some people's cup of tea, I do look forward to seeing it.

I feel really stupid for not going to see this in the theaters. This movie is the movie I asked for without knowing it. The director is really really really effective in achieving things I've never seen in movie before. There are subtle things like when walking in the forest and the image fizzles into something abstract that turns out to be the trees in the next shot that slowly comes into clarity and the two scenes connect seamlessly. The camera work where he has to run into the apartment and slam the door shut? The set design and the attention to detail, even with the elevator and inside his drawer. The different houses! Joaquin Phoenix was the absolute perfect actor for the role. His normal reaction to all that surrounds him and how his conversations break down were so surreal yet so realistic and typical. I love how the movie shows how fast things can turn on you. The death scenes were expected and of course off-putting, but the stark contrast between living and dying is very potent in this movie. I should also mention that the sound mix was exceptional - there were parts where a haunting sound would be floating in the center of the room - it gave the effect of a heigh channel even though I have a 7.1 setup. I could continue talking about how cool this movie was. 3 hours was needed as I didn't want it to end.

A24 is by far the best film company. All movies are original. Respect to all directors and writers. The Witch, Hereditary are some of my favorites.

Outstanding film. It's about how people use fear to set Beau up to fail. Parents, corporate advertisers, and the media make up the structure of society and influences Beau's decisions/actions, and beliefs. Media (anything that has images and/or words in print, digitally transmitted or broadcasted) is used to scare/manipulate/fool and control Beau. In this extreme case, Beau becomes intentionally incapacitated of critical thought and the ability to stand up for himself, purposefully confused, and suffers tremendously as a result. Continuously punished, blamed, shamed, guilt-tripped, invalidated. In this sense, we are all on the Beau Spectrum. I just watched it, so these are my initial thoughts, and this is how the film speaks to me, thus far. I know I will be pondering this for years to come and I'm grateful I got to see such a fantastic work of art.
Edit: Wikipedia: A "cautionary tale" is a tale told in folklore to warn its listener of a danger. There are three essential parts to a cautionary tale, though they can be introduced in a large variety of ways. First, a taboo or prohibition is stated: some act, location, or thing is said to be dangerous. Then, the narrative itself is told: someone disregarded the warning and performed the forbidden act. Finally, the violator comes to an unpleasant fate, which is frequently related in expansive and grisly detail. I believe this is a film about cautionary tales, and how the opposite can happen if we believe them.

Comic absurdity:The mother is absurd (wildly unreasonable), the various situations that Beau finds himself are absurd (wildly illogical - all the people in the street in zombie-form entering his apartment the moment he leaves; wildly inappropriate: being treated for his injuries in a teenager's bedroom), every person he meets (except Elaine) is a freak, a jerk, inflexible, mean (as a result of the real-life absurdity of taking a drug for every ailment mentality, over-reactivity.
A world of violence, minimal kindness.
It's a cautionary tale of what will happen if you listen to society's cautionary tales, and don't think for yourself. "Society" (for lack of a better term) will destroy you if you allow it, as it is a very destructive force.
I want the "Death by Anal" poster for my wall for Christmas, please.

This movie probably flopped partly because of the title. Beau.
The common man will not engage with that name and a lot of people only see the title on web ads so don't see a trailer.
Beau is a very "gay" name. Most people aren't caught up to speed yet and will immedi dismiss the movie because the main character is called beau.

I really wish I never watched this, I suffer from mental illness, depression, anxiety and ptsd, schizophrenia runs in my family and to be honest distinguishing reality can’t always be easy.
This really triggered my PTSD and infect at one point I really had a bad episode half way through this movie to the point I broke down really badly.
I wouldn’t recommend watching it If you suffer from these, as it can trigger core memories you may have forgotten about. Like it did with me. Really wish I didn’t watch this

It’s pretentious, no one can say it isn’t, and one who claims to fully understand this movie is lying. However I myself absolutely loved the film. To be truthful, I really can’t explain my infatuation with the film; but I will say this, love it or hate it, it’s a polarizing art house film. If anyone is familiar with the works of Lars Von Trier and enjoys his work, I think you’ll enjoy this flick.
