Alien Romulus Controversy Explained

The only controversy is that some knucklehead saw this as a controversy.

The family were asked for permission. The family were all for it. Yes people are entitled to there opinions but at the end.of the day it's no one business other than his family. If anything it's honouring the man. People will always winge regardless. The movie was awesome be happy we have fresh new ideas with a director who respects the franchise. I want to see a movie showing us the mayhem after big chap was located and brought back to the station.

We all have strong opinions as humans, you never satisfied everyone. Just like the movie Passion Of Christ, everyone was on top of that movie, from all races, historians and religion believers . The bottom line is movie art . Take it or leave it.

The Ian Holm moment wasnt great. Peculiar choice but i understand why they thought it would work. It didnt spoil the movie and i dont get the hatred just because of it. Movie was great and paid himage to the original and others. Some other superb ideas also. Just enjoy it for what it is

The only issue that I have with Ash model being in this movie is that it makes me question the original alien movie. We all know in Prometheus and in covenant there was the David Walter series. Everybody of the crew of these respective movies knew that they were synthetics. Even in the aliens movie, Burke tells Ripley it’s standard procedure to have a synthetic on board in reference to Bishop. In alien Captain Dallas tells Ripley that prior to them leaving the planet Thedus, they replaced the science officer. He did not know it was a synthetic, and neither did the rest of the crew. Now, if there were more Ash models then surely one of the more experienced members of the crew would’ve known. They would’ve came across them at many port of calls. It gives me the impression that Ash, was a unique synthetic. It is nice to know that the estate of Ian Holm gave permission to use his likeness, but to me having an ash type model in this movie raises questions about the original alien movie.

First viewing the CGI of ian holm was horrific. But after watching it the secone time last night i didnt mind it so much

In terms of storytelling, I think they use 'Ash' to bring familiarity to the movie by filling the gap. The movie aims to connect Weyland Utani's fascination of the lifeform in the first movie and delving into research of the xenomorph by using Ash as the 'villain'. Its not new that the androids are portrayed by 'same' actor. We also saw 'David' as the evil android in Prometheus and he re-appeared as the good version (Walter) plus David himself in Alien Covenant.

A second ANDY would have been the best choice. That would have taken it to masterpiece level. Having said that I'm fine with Ash. It doesn't bother me nearly as much as hearing your unique pronunciation of Furiosa.

They should have brought back the android call from alien resurrection. That would have pissed off absolutely everyone.

In Alien Covenant Walter is a replica of David 8 so I see nothing wrong with using Ian Holm's image if it's gone through the right channels.

I believe Fede requested Holm’s likeness be used in the film as a tribute to the actor. So the director did it out of respect and the family gave him their blessings so there’s no real debate to be had.

So thr credits goes to Ian's family? Like they got the money?

I thought the Rook effects looked fine, they only had a 80M budget and obviously spent alot of that on practical effects. I really liked having Ian Holmes likeness included.

Ian being in it isnt a problem. He got permission from the family. Non story there. The fact they cookie cut whole segments from previous films is a much bigger issue.

It didn't bother me much imo the Get Away from Her line was way more bothersome to me than the CGI synthetic

I think the bigger controversy is Bjorn being the asshole that impregnated his own cousin, Kay. And yes, Fede has confirmed this himself. Honestly, as disgusting as it sounds, it’s a lesson on the results of incest offspring, as we see in the third act.

It's illegal to use an actors likeness without concent since Crispin Glovers likeness used in Back to the Future 2

As permission was given, and Ian would have more than likely have been okay with it, I had no problem with the use, only with the "overuse", they should have kept Rook down to a couple of appearances so that hopefully the CGI around the mouth could have been made better

If the family says it is alright, it is alright with me. I mean, I think the family knew him and what he'd think. It is a good topic to discuss, and, like you said, it may come down to putting it in your will if you want your likeness to be featured in a film after you go.

That single thing is the worst part of the movie, and if THAT’S the worst thing then I think we’re good (lol)! Outrageously good movie.

they should have done what they did with bishop in alien 3 and use a actual puppet and have it all beaten up and damaged. make a mask mold of the actors face and put it over the damaged synthetic so you could see the actors
face but also in the damaged parts see the robot parts underneath.

If it was David, no one would have survived, if it was bishop model then everyone would survive…. Ash/rook are the models that are not as intelligent as David model but still as homicidal

Please. There is no controversy about Ian Holm being represented in the movie. The estate signed off on it, and they are the ones who get to decide. Everyone else can kick rocks.

i was born in 1994 and mann the first 25 years of my life and barely hear about ppl being offended at most things, now everyone gets offended just by breathing.

There is no controversy. The Holm family were asked and granted permission to use Ian's likeness, saw what the movie makers did in advance and had approved of it. Yes, the concensus among fans is it was bad and could have been done better, but the family were happy, so end of discussion really.

Here’s what I’d say about the film
They stole/used entirely too many lines or situations from the 2 OG’s.

Besides that? Not bad, not bad.

WHY did the Xenomorph save Rain from certain death???
-it’s not a Face Hugger that needed a specimen to impregnate
-it doesn’t need to take extra care to cocoon her for some nearby Queen or baby Face Huggers
-Xenomorphs hunt; but are not “Hunters” like Predator

…so PLEASE, ANYONE-WHY? She is DEAD, FINISHED! What, the Xenomorph was like “nuh uh gravity, she’s MINE!” ??? Or, WTF?
😂-but seriously, I’m all ears…unless I as well think it’s that; Xenomorph needed to kill Rain, not let her fall…?
