This scene just brought me to instant tears. Ed’s sheer resilience and unshakable will is a force to be reckoned with. He didn’t bust open that door because of his physical strength but his unhindered, relentless determination to let his brother know that he’s coming for him. As someone with a younger brother I can totally relate and for some reason when I watch this scene I just resonate with it to my very core. One of the greatest scenes of ALL TIME.

My youngest brother recently has suffered an accident while riding a motorcycle resulting in him being in coma. He’s living in Brazil and I’m living in Spain and for economical reasons I can’t be near him now. During my prayers or while I’m sleeping I try to reach out to him so that he can come back. Recently he’s been recovering and the doctors are saying he’s getting better every day in a speed they weren’t expecting. I’m so glad the worst didn’t happen, although he hasn’t woken up yet but I know he will!

This scene was so impactful for me not just bc of Ed’s sheer determination to comfort his brother and reassure him even if he couldn’t bring him back, but the reveal that Al’s body was in such horrible condition after being abandoned for so long- I was imagining a healthy young man properly dressed when I imagined Al, not a skeletally thin, pale body with those sunken eyes… the whole thing was such a shock.

I caught myself thinking that this scene would be perceived differently if the characters were lovers. Just imagine: a guy and a girl who love each other with pure, sincere love. It is perceived as somehow cliched and hackneyed. And now we bring back the two brothers (and even parents can be replaced). It is perceived differently, more real and natural. Once again I am convinced that The Alchemist is a masterpiece, others did not cause such a response in the soul
