Unlike Wahinghton who lost almost all his battles but won the last and most critical one Lee won many of his but lost the decisive one that could have won him a negotiated settlement. I would of course want the Washington outcome. It's like the baseball team that has the best record and beats everyone down for it but somehow the wildcard winner beats them in the World Series.

If they let all those troops out in the sun waiting then why couldn't they have better planned it and waited a day to move at night their troops as stealthily as possible all the way up to the fence and even planted charges on the studs holding the fence up blowing gaps in the fences to spring into a early morning surprise attack? They would avoided great amounts of casualties from the movement across the field from artillery and done something that was unheard of and thats positioning troops close to the enemy lines having removed all noisy equipment and sprung into action at sunrise. Then using their massed artillery to bombard the flanks of their attacking forces lines on the union lines where the union troops would not be able to flank them when they attacked.

The ranger is so knowledgeable about his Gettysburg history, that he brings historical events back to life again!

I'm looking for help locating any and all info regarding my Great Great Grandfather, William T. Riley, who fought with the 28th MA, Company A. From the information I can find he enlisted 12/30/1861, was mustered in 12/31/1861, promoted to Corporal March or April, 1863 and was made prisoner 7/3/1863 at Gettysburg, Pa. I've been trying to find his parole date to complete a history of battles he may have taken part in after the date of his capture but the only thing I've been able to find is listed as "Paroled date n.s. *". According to other data I know he did return to his unit because his records indicate that he was promoted to Sergeant 8/1/1864 and mustered out 12/19/1864. I don't have a lot of money and can't hire a professional historian but I'd still love to find out and complete his service history. If you could please point me in a direction where I could find and data to help me I would be thankful beyond belief. Not to be repetitive but, Thank You for any and all replies. or answers anything will be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like neither side had a recon Scotts in a foreword position ahead of the main body of troops.

The Union armies committed countless atrocities against southern civilians. They were basically barbarians.I have no sympathy for Union soldiers that lost their lives during the Civil War

By the way, The yankees were in the same hot sun as the REBS, only under hot shelling. Were they vomiting?

I know Lee's reputation was earned. Ask Grant. Why he did this is a mystery. It was what the Japanese did on Guadalcanal.

Don't listen to people that speak years later. Listen to what they said at the time. Ewell was jealous of Longstreet. Lee knew that. "It's all my fault". "I thought we were invincible". In plain english Lee knew there were 5 corps in the area of attack. THE ATTACK WAS BONE HEAD.

Longstreet was correct and Lee was wrong.

Lee committed a huge mistake. I don't know if realized what had happened on the 2nd day and night. on the 2nd day the attack failed and 3 more armies arrived since his attack failed.

Matt's great---THE CAMERA OPERATOR COULD BE REPLACED BY A TRIPOD, A TOTAL ZOMBIE. HE HOLDS TO CAMERA LOCKED ON MATT, HE NEVER PANS THE CAMERA. MATT WILL POINT AWAY AT SOMETHING, DOES THE CAMERAS FOLLOW MATTS SIGNAL AND TURN IN THAT DIRECTION?.......NO! THIS OPERATOR STAYS LOCKED ON MATT STILL POINTING.
IS THE CAMERA UNAWARE OF HIS LACK OF MOVEMENT OR SIMPLY TOO LAZY TO BOTHER? THAT CAMERA OPENS VIDEO POINTING AT MATT AND ENDS THERE. THE VIEWERS ALWAYS WANT TO SEE WHAT LIES BEYOND AND AROUND THE SPEAKER, ITS OK TO KEEP CAMERA MOVING BY PANNING TO VARY THE VIEW WHILE MATT SPEAKS. I'M TIRED OF VIEWING A WALKING TOUR WATCHING NOTHING BUT A PORTRAIT OF RANGER, NOTHING ELSE!
MATT'S TALKS ARE WONDERFUL.
