Dog Eat Dog World: Encounter between Bulindi Chimps & Village Dog

In Uganda, some groups of chimpanzees live close to villages, such as at Bulindi. These so-called “village chimps” have daily encounters with local people as well as domestic animals like dogs, goats and cattle. While the chimps seem unfazed by many animals kept by people, encounters with dogs can be antagonistic affairs. Village dogs tend to approach and bark noisily at chimpanzees. Moreover, the chimpanzees probably have experience of being harassed or chased by hunting dogs at some point in their lives. Consequently, dogs and chimpanzees are not ‘best friends’.

This video shows an interaction between chimpanzees and a village dog at Bulindi. At the start of the clip, youngsters Ally, Maria and Jackie, together with young adult female Jemima, have been disturbed from their jackfruit meal by the approach of a barking dog. While the others retreat, 7-year old Ally tries threatening the dog with a broken cassava branch, but it’s to no avail; the dog helps himself to the chimps’ jackfruit. This insult proves too much for Jemima, however, who charges at the dog and delivers a hearty slap to its rump. The dog quickly turns tail and the chimps recover their jackfruit! Notice how Jemima smells her fingers where she made contact with the dog. Even Ally is curious to have a sniff. Finally, for good measure and to impressive the others, Ally makes a bold show of chasing after the dog … which is already long gone, of course.
