I had the luxury of visiting (on my own not as part of a tour) in the late 80s a manufacturing workshop of leather handbags and accessories in Italy (Florence/Firenze) - the voyage of discovery educated my eye for subsequent purchases - no branding no marketing no packaging the final product just wrapped in tissue.
And I invested in woven styles (4 colours) and smooth, kid, calf leather, evening, day and afternoon styles (even clutch bags) - in all I purchased a dozen items perhaps more. I still have them now and they have developed a beautiful patina of wear - no one bag is punished beyond recognition except for one the postal across the shoulder bag in black. Would I buy a luxury brand - never because it's only a status symbol and I prefer function, style and elegant quality over overt advertising of a brand and their interpretation of fashion and status.
I say if you want me to advertise your brand there is a substantial fee.

I don't think the point being made is that these luxury handbags aren't worth it, it's that they're not worth it based strictly on quality. You're paying for the the name, status, creativity of the designers, a refined aesthetic, and the brand's enormous advertising and other business costs. If you care about those things, then it may be worth it to you.
