Great Stuff Peter.... Reminds me of Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations". The way you treat everyone with such respect, you get the very best out of them in the interviews.

It seems to me this is the largest case of Stockholm syndrome ever.
The coal company ruined their lives, yet they want it back.

"Everyone needs coal. Coal is the future. Coal gave us black lung. Coal left and gave us nothin."
LOT of sophism and contradictions in these parts.

The geography of the Appalachian, dunno what it is, but it pretty unique. I don't know of anything like it on Earth. All the narrow, but not to deep, valleys. Same with the ridges in-between, and the thick green forrest everywhere. It's beautiful! I get why many don't wanna move, and are proud of it. The geography makes almost anywhere remote too. Since all the road goes trough the valleys, and not over the ridges. I hope I get the chance to experience it someday.

This video should be taught in schools. Goodness, so many important lessons about this world we live in that you won't be getting elsewhere.

Slavery was much different. Can not compare what Africans went threw . Tied and chained taken from there homeland thrown on boats. Off to work in foreign land. Legalized slavery needs to be rephrased. That is not accurate . Slavery and coal miners are to different groups. Sorry!

Being from Pittsburgh, I spent a lot of time in WV, it's beautiful and peaceful. As a RN, I've seen how the mines destroy miners health. It's sad.

Really interesting. Thanks... I live in Wales, UK & exactly the same has happened here with the coal mines clsoing esp in the South...Also the Victorian slate mine owners in the North has their own shops, tokens etc...what a con, all that hard work, bad conditions &...wealth building for the owners who leave places destitute & dirty with nothing much left for the ex workers...disgusting, ungrateful & inhumane
