and i was read something interesting about circular bussiness from iPhone that ----- "We propose that people should keep their phones for longer (reduce demand), have their phones repaired if something breaks (repair), give the phone to someone else if they have to get a new one (reuse) and hand then into a company that does ethical recycling once they really cannot be used any more (recycle)," Cole-Hamilton said. this is win win solution and to be wise for using REE.

It's good to see Apple also accepting Samsung and Pixel devices (albeit at a lower value). (in USA)

I also think that offering trade-in program prevents some of the users from switching to android devices since the latest iPhone becomes discounted and they could get a cheaper iPhone. This further insures that the users are engaged in the apple services like apple music etc. which makes it harder for the users to ditch the ecosystem. I could be wrong though.

If Apple gives me $900 back each year for $1000 phone then I’ll trade it in other then that I’ll just sell it myself

Luxury fashion brands destroy their unbought merchandise. They do this because if they sold it at a discount, it would reduce their perceived value by making their products less "exclusive". This is similar to why Apple buys back the phones, for the purpose of future sales. If those iPhones floated around the US, many people would just buy a dirt cheap 2 year old model and NOT buy a new one. Apple wants you to buy a new one. So they buy up all the "cheap ones" so that we all buy the new expensive ones.

apple india does not sell refurbs.. there is no option to buy refurbs from apple store or website

It doesn't benefit anything. My elder sister bought an iphone 12 which didn't boot at all. I think this is the reason. (I am from India)

But what happens when people in these emerging markets upgrade their iphones? Does Apple buy them back again? Or do they have the necessary recycling capacity to handle the returned iphones? I have a feeling they just end up in landfills anyway, so while the problem is reduced I don't know if it's really fixed

They also sell old phones for double the trade-in cost they give the customers. I have an iPhone 11 pro max at which I would get $ 400.00 plus at which they would resell it for $900.00 that is almost what it cost new.,

it's also Apple's strategy to make more money by offering trade in with your damaged iphone for a new one because it's faster than repairing it, or saying we can't repair it so just trade it with a new iphone model.

Apple has never sold official refurbished devices in India like ever😹
And India's law will prevent them from selling refurbished phones as new phones. Also India now makes every non-pro iPhone model.

And the so-called developing market buys Apple products at a much higher cost Compare to Americans.
The iPhone 13 pro 256GB costs $1599 in India. Even after said trade of $387 it costs $1212.

And again no Apple has never sold refurbished device in India all though we wish they did.

It’s the same reason the price of the phones are the same for financing vs cash. They want to punish you no matter what but sell it as a benefit to you
