I thought about this question and if I was given a salary range before going into interview, I would always give the highest number for my expectation. Why would I low ball myself right from the beginning of negotiations?

I feel like these answers sort of reflect that you have self respect and were raised with extremely good values, and have applied those values where opportunities align, but I guess I never learned that growing up and it's kind of hard to learn at this point but I appreciate this video explaining exactly what I can do to improve. I really thank you for creating this and I hope it helps your channel grow because this is golden advice.

What a misleading information mate! My experience says recruiters want a number so that they can match against their budget.

This doesn't work. Many hiring officials have a budget for the role. They don't want to waste time doing the interview process if at the end they are faced with a candidate who is looking for a salary of 80k (plus whatever benefits and opportunities) if the budget is 60 to 70k.

Although this video is 5yrs old, this strategy worked for me yesterday. I tweaked it a bit but it still gave me an upper hand. Recruiter said she respected my decision not to give a number just yet until I make an educated decision. Can’t wait to watch your other videos! Thank you

Never give a number....what? No offense love the variation but i could have sworn was the right answer being what is projected in the job which is now being interviewed.
Like lets get some good old examples.
Lets say you are sifting through adds and a position on their website states....17.25 per/hr.
Is that what you should be expecting, you wouldnt be obviously showing expectations of prospective employer lying and not keeping their words.
Thats the way i perceived it back when i was an employee..and whether right or wrong in interpretation..it always passed that question quickly.
To me its uh did you read the job post or the position details.

Frankly speaking it's provocative question specifically from 3rd party recruiter who's NOT will decides to be hired or how much to be paid. Silly question, my answer is; as much as you can offer... or will comply with the position budget ..

Today I had an interview. First question was why do you want to leave your current job?
I answered by not blaming my previous company directly because I am a laid down off candidate.
2nd question was what was your roles and responsibilities?
While telling my roles and responsibilities the recruiter switched to next question on expected salary... I answered according to the market situation. Later recruiter told me "we will get back to you"
Later received a mail that We am not shortlisted.
So I want to know where I did wrong?

My last week recruiter required this number from the online application form. You got no way out if you wanna run for the position. And I put a lower value than in the interview cause I could put more argument in person. Finally they told me right away they had a fixe salary and is was much lower....kkkk so hard....

I'm curious about this approach if the job description includes a list of benefits and a salary range. Does it come across as uneducated if you don't reflect that you've read that and understand it? Or is there always room to negotiate, even outside of the posted range?

That's probably the best video on how to answer the expected salary question.
I have two questions though.
1. What if they insist to get a number?
2. Would it make sense if we reverse the question and ask them how much they have allocated for that position?

I'm getting the impression lowballing is common in my industry. Being employed, I have to carefully select which opportunities I would pursue through the interview process. Obviously, I can't keep taking time off work. One of my concerns is if a company would even pay in the range I'm looking for.

Thoughts.

Why do companies play this game? If you ask me a question, I'm going to answer it. They want a direct answer for everything so why not salary?
Why are they playing this poker game with someone's compensation?

However, today employers require you to apply online and the expected wage is a required field that requires an entry before you submit. So, good advice if you are living in 1998. Doesn’t really help in current times.

Great video! I liked your response to the question "What's your Expected Salary"? I too think its a good idea in the interview process to not disclose a number. However, what do you do when you want to apply for a position and the company has that as a required question on the online application with a red asterisk. In other words, the system will not let you proceed without a response. In that situation what do you recommend putting down in that field?
