Transformers normally have thermal shutdown. Only when you bypass it, does the oil get very hot.

A transformer went boom last year slightly north of the Athabasca River in Athabasca Alberta Canada, power was knocked out north of the river, where I live east of the river the lights flickered a bit and gave me a heart attack but otherwise i was fine

Dry type transformers are safer than the oil type ones

These can only happen in backwards third world grids. Poor grounding, no lightning protection, no overcurrent protection on the line side, etc.

Right now, I’m installing 34,500 to 415v transformers at a job, and they’re properly grounded and protected from the switch yard.
