What did you say was running on the laptop again? When I use amp sims in Logic it is sometimes laggy so I guess it's something more lightweight to run

wait...im confused. Wouldn't you need a real power amp to power a stage cab??

To make it more reliable and lighter...you could use an Intel NUC with Windows, Linux (my favourite) or OS X installed, with <insert your DAW here> and Helix Native. It gets a bit more technical, but you can use a remote desktop client on your tablet or laptop to manage it. The point is that your laptop is a multi-use device, whereas you want your stage rig to be single-purpose (never connected to the Internet, for example, because yes...Apple stuff is as vulnerable to viruses as anything else). You can also use your laptop as a backup if something goes wrong.

I run Helix Native through MainStage with some keyboard stuff and an acoustic patch added. Its really easy on the back!

For that extra output. Just an idea. Maybe do what John Petrucci does, and have it go out to a small stage monitor in front of you that you can
1. Put your foot on
2. Stand in front of to get a sustainy feedbacky thing going

Maybe you should consider switching to iPad and Cubasis, and using something like bias amp on iPad. Steinberg audio interfaces work flawlessly with cubasis and iPad

Dear David Maxim Micic, if HELIX have an TABLE VERSION of that VST you are using ( ... it's a VST, isn't it?), it would be an very good BACKUP solution ( ... just in case ... we'll never know ... ) ...

Question: How do you output a line level signal form your interface into a speaker cab?

In most band practice rooms and small venues there'll be a cab, but no amp...
I don't have IEMs and fold-back in small venues I play at is often un-reliable :/

The minimalist approach with your rig has certainly given me clarity and hope, in that acquiring some sort of boutique sounding tone isn't as out of reach as it used to be. This digital era has made it so much easier for the modern guitarist/musician to cultivate exactly what they need to produce a stellar mix, whether it's a live or studio production.

This idea of having a really small guitar rig also came to my mind so what I'm doing now is a pedalboard with a Victory V4 Kraken tube preamp pedal and a cab sim pedal. For a clean sound I thought about a Clean Tube Booster by MP Custom FX. In this configuration I'll have "3 channels" and with the clean booster in front of the Kraken that gives me another 2 extra sounds. Out of the cab sim I'm going to some stereo (FX loop type) pedala and to a stereo DI, directly to FoH. With the 2 direct outs from the DI box I can do what I want. I can go to an audio interface and record my guitar or go to a monitoring dedicated mixer. The whole idea was to create a pedalboard that can do anything so the FoH guy only gives me some volume and I don't have to worry if he's any good.
Your idea is also very convenient. Cheers!

Ive been using a similar setup for the last 5 years. On laptops that were a lot worse. I have a fast track ultra. Sound card which supports 6 ins and 6 outs. So i have two guitars and a bass through my laptop. I am also sending clicks to to drummer with his reference samples and then two channels for samples to the foh. Plus i have all my patch changes
automated since i am on a click track. Using a laptop is a lot more convenient than a processor.

People do not realize that amp can fail as well, or any piece of equipment, I think it is awesome to play shows like that, you have so many options and it sounds amazing also.

I gigged with a similar setup for 2 years using a Macbook too. I loved how light I traveled but I was always concerned with ground issues at venues which sometimes added some hum to the signal of the usb interface. That being said, I love your setup! Way simpler than mine and sounds much better hahah

I've been using a similar setup for almost 2 year now! I started with some jst stuff then moved to a line 6 helix native. I never had any issues. It's way more convenient than carrying around my 100 watt tube amp or relying on whatever amp is available. Plus, I know the sound will always be consistent.

Loved the insight on your setup. Any extra info on how to setup all the routing would be great. I'm thinking heavily about moving to this kind of setup as I hate having to be aware of positioning to press pedals. Also, which headphones do you use live?
