Nice i went through something similar a few days ago. Ended up making a automatic updater that connects to a server downloads a certain file from it, compares it to a certain file on the machine it is running on and if they don't mach it is supposed to run a scrip that automatically updates to the newest version of the application it is part of.

Got the basics working in an hour, never touched python before other that one lonely hello world.
